LaRon Landry skips first Jets OTA

The Jets signed former Redskins strong safety LaRon Landry within a week of the launch of free agency.  Last week, the Jets signed former Dolphins strong safety Yermiah Bell.

Coincidentally or otherwise, Landry wasn’t present for the launch of the Jets’ Organized Team Activities on Monday, according to Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger.

It’s probably coincidental, given that Landry reportedly has been a spotty at best participant in the Jets’ offseason program, and in light of the fact that, ideally, both Bell and Landry will be in the starting lineup.  Per Vrentas, Landry said when he signed that he would attend the offseason workouts “as much as possible.”

The OTA sessions remain voluntary, with only one mandatory offseason minicamp per team.  But with limited offseason workouts under the new CBA, coaches undoubtedly will be even stronger in their belief that the players should be there — even if the coaches aren’t allowed to ever say that.

Landry was limited to eight games in 2011 due to an Achilles tendon injury (he calls it a bone injury).  He is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season, but much of the compensation on his one-year deal is tied to his ability to show up and play.

In hindsight, maybe the Jets should have shifted a large chunk of the deal into an offseason workout bonus.

This sounds like a real winner of a guy. One would think if wasn’t with the team last year would show up on a new team. Good luck Jets.

    Make a first impression? CHECK.
    Lead by example? CHECK.
Ensure preparation to avoid injury? CHECK.

    WHAT A JOKE.

  3. itsacurse says: May 22, 2012 8:36 AM

What is the implication here? That he’s lazy or that he’s still hurt? I’d wager he wasn’t there because he’s not medically ready.

  4. phillyb6 says: May 22, 2012 8:41 AM

He works out on his own so no one can see him take his “vitamins”

  5. cash804 says: May 22, 2012 8:42 AM

Take it from a Skins fan…dude is in shape, but I’m not convinced that the Achilles hold up…and judging by the addition of Bell, it appears that the Jets share my sentiment.

  6. darthvader89 says: May 22, 2012 8:44 AM

Because LaRon Landry doesn’t work out enough……………….

Two guys starting at the same position for the Jets…

Haven’t I heard this joke before?

  8. jmagnet28 says: May 22, 2012 8:54 AM

eh, no biggie. I’d rather him continue to rest his achilles as much as possible.

It’s not as if this guy is lazy when it comes to getting in shape. OTAs in May for Landry don’t mean much. However he better be reading the playbook!!!

  9. myspaceyourface says: May 22, 2012 8:56 AM

And if he blows out a knee because he is contractually obligated to participate in OTA’s you will write an article criticizing them for that decision.

Why don’t you start reporting and stop pontificating.

  10. cleminem757 says: May 22, 2012 9:07 AM

He needs surgery to repair his achilles. That’s why he has been limited the last 2 years. Have fun jets fans watching be awesome for a few games, then miss the rest of the season with the same injury he refuses to have fixed.

The guy should be in the training room getting his potentially damaged ACL some more treatment.

Laron Landry is a Porsche with Kia guts. He looks good, but the Kia breaks can’t handle porsche performance.

He needs to get that achilles fixed, but would rather be a workout warrior than a football player.

  14. cobrala2 says: May 22, 2012 9:22 AM

Intelligent andyreidcarboload doesn’t know the difference between the Achilles and the anterior cruciate ligament. /smh
Probably of the same ilk that gets wowed by Landry’s bodybuilding regiment.

He’s in the middle of a 3 month biceps curl superset and can’t be disturbed.

Too hurt to be there? Coma?

  17. flapjackdaddy says: May 22, 2012 9:36 AM

Why would he and Bell both start? You are forgetting about Jim Leonard. They gave him big money.

    Bell is clearly Landry insurance.

  18. mrx149 says: May 22, 2012 9:37 AM

As a Redskins fan I have dealt with this injury for over two years. It is a bone spur and all of the time in the world is not going to make him heal. His achilles can not withstand the rigors of an NFL season. As soon as he starts to practice hard, that spur is going to rub and irriate that achilles and he will have to sit.

Us Skins fans know this song all to well. Maybe once in Landry’s career with the Skins he fully participated in the Skins offseason program. And now that I think about it, once is being generous.

The guy has his own program and its clear he will never deviate from it. Is that good or bad? Well the guy is ripped, but he also cannot stay healthy for an entire year. And when it came to his achilles, the Skins wanted him to get surgery when he first hurt it 2 years ago. He refused, and seems clear he is still refusing.

Jets fans need to get used to Landry being a no show for the offseason, and probably for stretches in the regular season moving forward. He works out like a beast, there is no question, but he does so with no supervision from his employer and it has had a negative impact on his career to this point. His frame cannot handle the load he demands of it. And there are no indications that will ever change.

    Enjoy NY.

Welcome to Laron v2.0 ie Laron v1.0. Exactly what he did with the Skins. Bodybuilding off season not a team guy plays 4-5 games. Enjoy!!

You might as well throw a cone in your secondary then send this diva out onto the field brother. What a clown he is for not getting surgury two seasons ago.

  23. rme111 says: May 22, 2012 10:02 AM

He never has tried to improve his technique, he is obsessed with muscle mass and making flashy hits. (ie: bounce off the ball carrier!)

  24. londonfletcher says: May 22, 2012 10:08 AM

Dude’s a wrecking ball for sure, but what good is a car without the tires?
I hate to see him leave DC, but when you’re as stubborn as he is and refuse surgery over and over to an injury that keeps coming back, you just have to let him walk and become someone elses problem.

  25. tlaw21 says: May 22, 2012 10:11 AM

LL is a phenomenal football player and thinks he’s taking care of his body with all the substances that he puts in there. Now he is a work out warrior but he mainly focuses on his upper body and arms especially his biceps. He doesn’t do much lower body work which as we all know can lead to injuries down the road and that’s what happened with his achilles. Also in DC the team doctor and two other outside docs(including James Andrews) told LL that he needed surgery to fix it. Finally after those 3 opinions he got a fourth who told him he didn’t need surgery and to do some blood cleaning thing take some meds and a lot of rest. This method is pretty much a band aid for he’ll b able to play a few games and then the same pain and uncomfort will start to seep in and y’all can kiss his butt bye bye. Until LaRon gets the surgery he wont have another effective season in the NFL still I wish him all the luck.

  26. eslamm11 says: May 22, 2012 10:15 AM

Rather than working on his technique, he is spending his freetime doing bicep curls in front of mirrors

  27. humpofdc says: May 22, 2012 10:18 AM

My prediction: Landry will only play 5 games tops! The Jets will not re-sign him. He will get the operation at the end of the season. Then he will return to the Skins.

Way to Go LaRon!… you are a perfect fit for the jests.

great talent, no brains, should have had surgery, you cannot holistically remove bone spurs…..(not that I’m a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once in 2005)

florio, instead of just writing the article, maybe you ask and say why he’s not there instead of making people speculate and say stupid comments like the ones i’m reading here.

My main problem with Laron Landry is that his number one priority on the field seems to be making the highlight reel on SportsCenter.

Over and over again, we’d all watch an opposing player break through to the secondary, get a critical first down and then … BOOM! … Laron Landry gives him the hit of his life. And then, despite the fact that the entire fan base is upset that the opponents have continued to move the chains and are closer to beating us again, Landry does his happy dance on the sideline celebrating the hit. I wish LaRon the best but I wish he’d learn one day that it’s a lot more fun to make those hits when you PREVENT a big play instead of just being happy you hit somebody.

  32. hendawg21 says: May 22, 2012 11:00 AM

Well this is one headache the Skins have voided themselves of…not only does Landry not get it, he will never get that big payday all athletes look for after their rookie deal. If this year pans out like the last two for him no team will give him a big deal not with the number of years he’s wasted his best years will soon be behind him and anyone willing to give him big contract will be a total loser. He may have been able to get his big payday had he gotten the surgery two years ago…

  33. joejgibbs says: May 22, 2012 11:05 AM

It really goes to show you the benefit of being in shape AND understanding how to play your position. All the weights in the world do not override the need to put yourself in positions to make plays, not be over aggressive. Brains and brawn, who’d of thunk it. I also don’t think his achilles can handle the muscle his body has amassed, and because he goes so hard during the games and working out, I don’t expect him to ever be 100% healthy. He doesn’t want surgery and wants to do it his way. I wish him luck though….
