If NFL ballplayers & the NFLPA don’t want to wear protective gear then they ALSO need to sign a waiver that post-NFL career they cannot come back and sue the NFL for injuries sustained during their playing time. Absolutely ridiculous !!!!!!!!!! You simply can’t have it both ways……………..

Boy oh boy, the player’s union is failing here.

The league wants you to wear pads for your own protection, and the NFLPA – says no?

I can see the Head Trauma court case now-

NFL: well your honor, we tried to get them to make changes, for their own benefit- but the players were not willing to make those changes, despite our best efforts.

As evidence, we’ve tried to get the players to wear additional padding on their bodies, but they have resisted, and even voted attempts to do so, down.

You’re assuming all the players wear jocks. Not all of them do, particularly in high school. There was a write-up about it here in Charlotte a couple years back. A number of high school players said wearing jocks & cups slowed them down too much and so they started wearing spandex shorts instead. So yes, it usually is about speed.

Football players are acting like everyone else in society – wanting to maximize immediate benefits, then later, if those choices have harmful consequences, blame others and expect others to fix it. Personal responsibility doesn’t mean much of anything to anyone anymore.

What’s wrong with wearing hip pads? I wore them in HS and they never really bothered me. NFL players are such divas… I bet Bo Jackson wishes he wore hip pads.

I think the players should have to wear whatever padding the owners want. The players are being paid a ton to perform and the owners want to protect their investment. If a guy has to miss 3 weeks because of a hip pointer, that lessens the quality of the product and thus costs everyone money. If you wear a hip pad, those injuries happen less often. The owners are being very reasonable if you ask me.

Negotiations failed at one point, when NFL reps put their hands over their ears, and danced around chanting,

“Knee pad is connected to the thigh pad, thigh pad is connected to the hip pad, hips pads connected to the jockstrap…..
dem pads, dem pads, you gots to use dem goldarn pads….”.

These players refuse to pad themselves to avoid injurys. How does a 1.oz hippad slow a player down? It doesnt. What happens when the NFLPA refuses to wear helmits? The NFLPA along with the NFL are getting very silly and not worth the price to watch.

I’m curious how much, if any, impact there is to a player’s football speed from wearing all their pads. Also, I’m sure they have access to much more advanced equipment than the big, foamy pads I had to use way back when.

players choose not to wear them for speed/range of motion advantages and also to provide a smoother and more difficult target to get a grip on if theyre ever carrying the ball…it is not to “look cool”…every advantage can equate to more $$$ thats why it’s done

Also, hip pads dont prevent serious injuries.

Weren’t unions founded & organized to represent the workers to fight for “safer work conditions?” Yeah, I believe so. I would believe that hip pads fall into the category of safer work conditions. I guess looking “fresh” & showing “swag” has taken precedent over player safety. Next thing you know, dozens of retired players will sue the NFL when they need hip replacements.

It’s all politics. It’s like when the GOP recently tried to push through a budget knowing it wouldn’t get past the Senate or President. This way, they can get it on record that Democrat X voted against $7 trillion in tax cuts and voted against funding our troops or whatever else they put in the bill.

When the NFLPA puts up a stink against mandatory padding, and the players try suing the league for not protecting them from injury, the league can say we tried here, here, and here to protect players and they fought against it.
