The quote sheet from the Dolphins naturally contains plenty of comments about the quarterback competition in Miami, with Matt Moore starting off as the starter and veteran David Garrard and rookie Ryan Tannehill trying to knock him off. But it was the absence of a key defensive player -- and the head coach’s refusal to talk about him -- that became more intriguing.

Asked by reporters why cornerback Vontae Davis didn’t practice, coach Joe Philbin said: “I am not going to get into any of that.”

It’s unclear what “any of that” may be. Recently, the brother of Vontae and 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was charged with murder and deemed unfit to stand trial.

Regardless of the reason, there was something ominous about what Philbin said.

UPDATE 5:49 p.m. ET: Per the Palm Beach Post, however, Davis has an unspecified injury. Philbin has no obligation at this point of the offseason to say anything about any player’s injury -- including even acknowledging the fact that the player is injured.
