Vikings start signing draft picks

The Vikings are the latest team to start signing draft picks and they decided to start at the end.

Seventh-round pick Trevor Guyton tweeted out word that he has signed his four-year contract with the team, including a photo of the pen he used to do the signing. Jeremy Fowler of the Pioneer Press also reports that linebacker Audie Cole, also drafted in the seventh round, has reached agreement on a deal.

Guyton played all over the defensive line at Cal, and it’s unclear exactly what role he’ll be expected to play in Minnesota. He could provide the team with some pass rushing push inside as part of the team’s defensive line rotation, but he’ll probably get a look in a variety of roles during workouts and camp. Cole played middle linebacker for N.C. State in 2011, but he’s likely to wind up on the weak side in Minnesota. Regardless of what role the Vikings see for him on defense, his route to making the team will come on special teams.

Signing Guyton and Cole leaves the Vikings with eight more draft picks to get under contract.

They have also signed….4th-round WR and “steal of the draft” Greg Childs as well as his high school and college teammate WR Jarius Wright (also from the 4th round)….also signed is 5th-round DB Robert Blanton and 6th-round K Blair Walsh who is assured of making the team since Longwell was already released after Walsh was drafted.

This is going to be a very young team. Position coaches will take this team as far as it can go this year. Could be a growth year or a surprisingly good year but definitely more talent on the cupboard. Camp battles will be very interesting. Slick “Rick” Spielmen did a helluva a job addressing several weaknesses. The middle of the D along with Walsh is the major question marks going into to camp. The coaching staff coaches those two areas up, it will be a entertaining year.
