Driver wins Dancing With The Stars

Packers receiver Donald Driver may never join Emmitt Smith and (in time) Hines Ward as members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  But they’ll always have something else in common, other than ownership of at least one Super Bowl ring each.

Smith, Ward, and Driver are the three NFL players who have won ABC’s Dancing With The Stars.  (We didn’t post this last night in deference to our friends in the Pacific time zone, who prefer to enjoy their televised dancing competitions unspoiled by advance knowledge of the outcome.)

Mrs. PFT informs me that the judges on the show informed Driver that he’s the best football player to have appeared on the show.  So he’s got that going for him.  Which is nice.

Driver now will take his mirror ball trophy back to Green Bay, where as agent Jordan Woy told PFT last week an effort to work out the details of Driver’s deal with the Packers will commence.

  1. Congrats to Donald. He showed what a true champion he is with total class, hard work and exceptional talent – and all coming from humble beginnings.

I didn’t see Emmitt, but Donald mirrored the same qualities we also saw in Hines Ward last year. Congrats to all three.

These accomplishments show that football players (as well as fans) do not have to be one dimentional.

  2. 735 catches 10,060 yards 59 TDs

    Lynn Swann 336, 5462, 51
    Michael Irvin 750, 11904, 65

Why not HOF? All he is… is consistent. And great.

He will probably be one that should get in but won’t.

  3. Hines Ward should never make it into the hall of fame. Just because the guy smiles a lot and was a “tough” player doesn’t mean he’s HOF worthy.

Do some research to realize that he’ll never get there. Geez.

  4. I do not understand the appeal of this “show”. There’s nothing at stake, nobody wins anything, and half the celebrities on the show aren’t household names anyway. It’s the embodiment of everything that’s wrong with prime time network TV now, but that discussion doesn’t belong on PFT.

  5. Go Donald! If you watch the show and watch how hard they work you will change your mind. It is tough to do this!

  6. If Hines Ward is going to be in the HOF, why will Driver not be considered?
He has every recieving record for the oldest franchise in the NFL. He has broken revieving records from Sterling Sharpe, James Lofton, and Don Hudson. Those are some pretty good names to have broken records from.
Not saying that he is a hall of famer, but should get a look!!!

Really?! A professional athlete won an athletic competition against a bunch of second-rate celebrities?!

Not a surprise comment, coming from a Lions fan!
Keep whining buddy, maybe the Lions can win something in your lifetime, maybe not! Don’t hold your breath, it could be fatal!

  8. Here’s hoping he dances into the end zone a couple of times in the SuperBowl next February using a few fancy moves he learned on DWTStars!!

    Way to go Donald !!

Early this week a pair of retirement-aged women taking a stroll in our neighborhood stopped and asked me if I had voted for Donald, or not. Everyone loves you in Wisconsin.

    Welcome back.

The networks should bring back Circus of the Stars. I’d like to see Warren Sapp fired from a cannon.

OMG…LOL….u win best comment of the day and it’s only 9:30AM:)

  10. I know I’m gonna get killed on the comments for actually watching last night to see DD (thank goodness for DVR), but I strongly encourage people to YouTube the 15 second bit Rodgers & Matthews did. So good!

    Donald Driver > Hines Ward

Sure Driver is better than Ward . . . unless, of course, you look at statistics. Ward has 265 more catches, over 2000 more yards receiving, and 26 more touchdowns. In the playoffs, Ward has 39 more catches, 506 more yards receiving, 7 more touchdowns and a Super Bowl MVP.

Is this the new math, Wisconsin?

  12. To everyone saying Ward shouldn’t get in:

Michael Irvin 750 catches, 11904 yards, 65 TDs
Hines Ward 1,000 catches, 12,083 yards, 85 TDs

    Irvin- 12 years
    Ward- 14 years

    Superbowls: Irvin=3-0 Ward=2-1
    Superbowl MVPs: Irvin=0 Ward=1

Ward played just 2 years longer than Irvin, and had 20 more TDs, 250 more receptions, and 179 more yards.

    Irvin, known as “The Playmaker”
    Ward, known as “The Jawbreaker”

They both had a huge impact on the game. If Irvin is in the HOF, Ward should be there too.

First I hate Irvin and was pissed when they let him in. I do love how he has become the lowest common denominator for whether or not a receiver gets in or not though. I never felt like Driver or Ward deserved to get in. My point is all three should be out and I like Driver a lot. I hope he plays for the Packers again who knows a few more yards and touchdowns couldn’t hurt his case.

  14. Say what you want about Driver and Ward, they are no Helio Castroneves. In addition to a DWTS trophy, he also has his face on his sport’s biggest trophy, the Borg-Warner trophy – can any of the NFLers say that?

I actually watched a bit of Donald’s performance on the web this morning. Well, I say I watched his performance, when I was really ogling the hot blonde he was sharing the stage with. Yowza.

Huh? I’m not a Lions fan, and what was whined about?

Seriously, does anyone actually watch that show?

Yes, Donald Driver. Said repeatedly he’s been a big fan from the beginning. And when prepping for his freestyle, he asked his partner “Remember the routine Drew and Cheryl did in season two?” Then he came out and blew away the audience with what a freestyle should be. Some of us love dancing and enjoy watching dancers who don’t work on poles.

Congrats, Donald!! Your wife was great, too!

I suppose whatever HOF OJ is in should allow Irvin in as well.

O.J. Simpson was one of the greatest players in NFL history and had a spotless personal record during his playing days. The murders occurred 14 years after his retirement from the NFL and nine years after his induction into the Hall of Fame. What he became later in life doesn’t erase his football accomplishments. If anything his presence in the Hall is a perfect lesson on how the mighty can fall. Justice has finally caught up with O.J. the man, and he is in prison. But his football history belongs in the Hall of Fame.

Funny, but I never see posts like yours about Lawrence Taylor, who famously bragged to 60 Minutes about the hookers he bought while playing in the NFL.

You’re right about OJ. All his issues occurred after his career. Irvin has been a scumbag his whole life.

Maybe they should have a POS HOF. They could put OJ, LT, Irvin, Rae Carruth, etc in it.

  19. Is DWTS run by the NFL or do all NFL fans watch this show and vote because clearly Driver was not the best dancer. It’s funny how many NFLer have won this award?

  20. Well, I hope it doesn’t increase the inferiority complex across the river. Maybe Adrian Peterson can get on the show in a couple of years. Or Michele Bachmann… no, she can only turn to the right. How about one of the players from the Lynx? They should really be talking about relocating. What’s a championship team doing in East Dakota?
