A.J. Smith: I hope the Broncos don’t run away with the AFC West

Ryan Mathews, Joe Mays AP

Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith will not be making any bold proclamations about his team winning the Super Bowl. Or even the division.

Smith told U-T San Diego that after the Broncos won the AFC West last year and signed Peyton Manning this year, they deserve to be the favorites.

“As far as the division race is concerned, I know this, it will be very difficult to win the West,” Smith said. “The Broncos are defending champs, and they added Peyton Manning. The Raiders and the Chiefs are much better. The Broncos are led by one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. I just hope the Broncos don’t run away with the division and leave the rest of us behind in the dust.”

There may have been some sarcasm in Smith’s voice when he said that, and he also said, regarding the Broncos’ status as the division favorites, “I could care less about predictions.”

Ultimately, Smith doesn’t really think the Broncos are going to run away with the division. He thinks the AFC West will be close, with the Chargers remaining in contention to the end, just like last year.

“I hope it’s a tight, competitive race to the finish line for all of us,” Smith said. “That way, whoever comes out on top in the West will be primed for their playoff run. May the best team win, and I hope it’s us.”

Oh great. The Lord of NO Rings thinks he is being clever again. What a loser.

  2. redguy12588 says: May 24, 2012 7:40 AM

Most passive-aggressive GM in the league.

How does this dude still have a job?

  4. rajbais says: May 24, 2012 8:43 AM

I don’t know about them, but I know your team won’t!!!

We all know you’ll just blow it in the playoffs if you do.

*couldn’t care less…. because if you could care less, that means you do care.

Wow, I can’t believe he hasn’t traded Rivers yet… That’s what you’re supposed to do with your stars, right? Sometimes I think Smith is just trying to wear attendance down to the point they can justify a move to LA.

  8. jimthebuilder27 says: May 24, 2012 9:40 AM

Peyton Manning is a great QB, but not the bedt ever. Has the Lord of No Rings ever heard of Joe Montana? Terry Bradshaw? Bart Starr? Or even Ben Roethlisberger?

AJ Smith must be doing something right, considering all the attention he receives from you naysayers.

Methinks you all wish you could be as carefree as he.

  10. joetoronto says: May 24, 2012 9:43 AM

Now all 10 Charger fans have to defend this idiot, yet again.

    Should be fun. :)

  11. sportsmeccabi says: May 24, 2012 10:04 AM

I actually think its the chiefs. They have one of the best defenses in football, they have one of the best backs in the league to go with an offensive line that received a shot in the arm with the addition of Eric Winston, a strong receiving core headed by Dwayne Bowe and complimented with Jonathan Baldwin (who I hear is progressing greatly), and some decent depth. The glaring weak spot is still in the interior of the offensive line and a limited quarterback.
But that is more than the teams in the rest of the division can say.

Don’t worry A.J. The Donkeys won’t win the AFC West. MegaHead will lead them to an 8-8 record and they will be watching the playoffs from home.

  13. gooboy6 says: May 24, 2012 10:15 AM

Lets see …Peyton Manning, 18 mths since he faced live NFL action , 4 neck surgeries and 37 yrs old . I’ll believe it when I see it, even Montana , Marino etc got old. His arm is not getting stronger but yeah he’ll be MVP , right…..
But all of these talking heads seem to know…..

  14. bucsfan5000 says: May 24, 2012 10:16 AM

He and Norv Turner should start packing their bags when the Chargers start 0-6.

  15. hsatpft says: May 24, 2012 1:18 PM

Smith knows that competition sells tickets. Only die hards want to watch a team that has nothing to play for after 10 games.

  16. raiderapologist says: May 24, 2012 6:24 PM

I hate to say it, but I agree with him. I don’t like seeing an 8-8 team in the playoffs. The AFC West is soft.

  17. jessethegreat says: May 24, 2012 9:35 PM

Chargers could have Seau and Harrison in their prime and they still wouldn’t win that division…. unless they get rid of Norv Turner! He’s the worst “slow start” coach in recent history. – I will give him credit though, at least he does get the team motivated and winning later in the season.

    Chargers
    Chiefs
    Raiders
    Broncos

  19. Thomas says: May 25, 2012 12:41 AM

The Raiders are absolutely not going to be better and I’m a fan. They are going to be in the AFC West basement (or AFC overall) this year. Half their defense went left town, lost Michael Bush and they’ve yet to sign any of those low round “value” picks.

Broncos (much as it gags me to say)
Chefs (because the Chargers are worse)
Chargers (because the Raiders are even worse)
    Raiders

He may be a very unlikeable person, so I understand why so many people hate him, but he isn’t that bad of a GM. When he started the Chargers were at the bottom of the league and even though they couldn’t make it to the big game under his watch they at least became a competitive team. He did have a few bad years recently with drafts and signing players but can anyone honestly say he has had a bad off season so far this off season? It could be his last with the Chargers so at least he is trying to make it count.

  21. hijackthemic says: May 25, 2012 9:59 AM

The Chargers are the only team in the league with an elite QB who are nothing but also-rans. They are no threat to win a Super Bowl in anybody’s mind outside of San Diego. How long do they plan to let their poor management keep screwing them up?

  22. dannymac17 says: May 25, 2012 1:11 PM

Joe Toronto opening his fat mouth yet again

    have fun at 4-12

“How does this dude still have a job?”

If the Chargers let him go he would be out of work for about 5 minutes. People who think A.J. Smith is a bad GM are just not paying attention.

  24. chargerfanbrian says: May 25, 2012 9:53 PM

AJ Smith is not responsable for turner not changing game plans when injured players make it impossable to just go long. Smith has always put a grate team on the field . We just need some one who knows how to use them.

Your right a bad GM would let someone like Brees go or Turner or Sproils or Jackson all in there prime. He’s a GREAT GM. My bad.

  26. chargerfanbrian says: May 26, 2012 12:13 AM

Jackson has been replaced by 2 desent wr. and jaksons attude and pay cheak will not be missed. Brees had to go cause we had rivers all ready for 2 years with big pay and brees shoulder was qusetionable. Tunner was let go so he could be grat he was a good guy and deserved to have hes own team. no one knew LT would not be able to produce. Sproils was due a big pay cheak and we didnt have cap room. I wouldve loved to keep him but smith made the smart choise

Blah blah blah just like a charger fan to always make excuses. What was Schottenheimers record 14-2 and he got fired. Now tell me how AJ had nothing to do with that. Yet he keeps Norv around and everybody knows hes just an OC. You keep thinking he’s good the Chargers keep thinking he’s good and the rest of the AFC West will leave you in the dust.

  29. chargerfanbrian says: May 26, 2012 11:19 PM

Norv dose need to go but Aj is still way better then bethared was. Any charger fan knows we traded up on gm. As for being left in dust your not thinking strait.Chargers have always had mannings number and chief and raiders wont do anything . and yea im a true charger fan for 20+ years i even watched every game ryan leaf played in . Real charger fans know how bad it could be and know ant chance is a good one.

  30. oside760 says: May 28, 2012 6:11 PM

as a person who used to be a chargers fan, i’d prefer that the chargers just make this season a disaster so that theres no doubt that aj and norv will be fired. once the chargers start 0-4 norv will be fired

    More cluelessness.

Schottenheimer was RETAINED after going 14-2 on A.J. Smith’s recommendation to Dean Spanos. AFTER Marty got butt hurt over not getting an extension, he specifically did stuff that the team owner (his boss) told him he could not do. Marty pressed the issue so that he would get himself fired and get a paid vacation for a couple years. You go do something your boss specifically tells you not to and let us know how it works out.

Meanwhile, ZERO NFL teams have hired Schottenheimer since then.
