APChargers General Manager A.J. Smith will not be making any bold proclamations about his team winning the Super Bowl. Or even the division.
Smith told U-T San Diego that after the Broncos won the AFC West last year and signed Peyton Manning this year, they deserve to be the favorites.
“As far as the division race is concerned, I know this, it will be very difficult to win the West,” Smith said. “The Broncos are defending champs, and they added Peyton Manning. The Raiders and the Chiefs are much better. The Broncos are led by one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. I just hope the Broncos don’t run away with the division and leave the rest of us behind in the dust.”
There may have been some sarcasm in Smith’s voice when he said that, and he also said, regarding the Broncos’ status as the division favorites, “I could care less about predictions.”
Ultimately, Smith doesn’t really think the Broncos are going to run away with the division. He thinks the AFC West will be close, with the Chargers remaining in contention to the end, just like last year.
“I hope it’s a tight, competitive race to the finish line for all of us,” Smith said. “That way, whoever comes out on top in the West will be primed for their playoff run. May the best team win, and I hope it’s us.”
