Coughlin: Nicks in a race to make Week One

The Giants announced that wide receiver Hakeem Nicks‘ recovery would last 12 weeks after he fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during Thursday’s OTA practice. But that might be an optimistic timetable.

Appearing on NFL Network later in the day, coach Tom Coughlin suggested Nicks will be in a race to play on opening night against the Dallas Cowboys.

“Well it’s probably gonna be close,” Coughlin acknowledged. “Hopefully, he will. [Nicks] feels confident about it. The doctors have expressed it as being something that they think will heal very, very well. … If it takes the full three months, you’re gonna be sitting right up next to that opening game. And we certainly hope that Hakeem is correct in saying he heals fast.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter explained on NFL Live Thursday that the Giants won’t have an accurate timetable for Nicks’ return until he undergoes surgery on Friday. Rookie Rueben Randle will have to get up to speed quick.

    He’ll be fine.

The response on the board for the previous story has demonstrated just how nervous the giants fans are about the situation. Rightly so, nicks is the best wr on the team.

  3. doctorfootball says: May 24, 2012 7:11 PM

Well, if he was going to have this kind of injury, this wasn’t a bad time for it. Even if he misses game 1, they still have him for the rest of their season. They have enough depth at the position to get by.

  4. grbigblue says: May 24, 2012 7:12 PM

Don’t worry haters. Hakeem will be back in time to shred your favorite teams secondary. This just means more time for the rook.

Let the hater parade begin. But dont worry your little heads, Hakeem will be back balling by week one. He’s not like that diva Qb in Philly who hurt his wittle finger and sat out like a sissy. At least Romo tried to man up…

What are we nervous about, genius? It’s 12 weeks (more like 6-8, and no hard work in training camp in August), not WEEK 12 return.

  10. nygf says: May 24, 2012 8:00 PM

Hakeem will be ready to go Week 1 and will tell Carr “I have a feeling you’re not in Kansas City anymore, Toto.”

All the giants fans know their owner is an idiot. You win the superbowl then the owner cries like a little girl that the redskins and cowboys violated the cap rules in an uncapped year. Give us our money back!!!! We didn’t do anything wrong. Mara needs to learn to shut his mouth and mind his own business!

Nicks is the Giants #1 wr and one of the best in league. His playoff performance puts him in that elite wr category just behind Calvin Johnson. He will be back. He will have 1000 plus yards again. Nicks/Cruz/randle/jerringan/ hixon or barden makes the deepest, most complete group of wrs in the league. any thoughts on how good Nicks is falcon/packers/pats fans?? Double Nicks and Cruz kills you. Try to take away Cruz like the pats did in the SB and nicks gets 10 plus catches and 100 yards.

    ==================================

We’re not that nervous. A little concerned, yes, but certainly not shaking in our boots. If he’s back by Week 1 or 2, that’d be great! If this happened in August, THEN we’d be nervous.

One more thing, majority of the comments on the previous story were Skins and Eagles fans gloating and trash talking.

  15. onegamedoesnotaseasonmake says: May 24, 2012 9:06 PM

sorry scummy eagles fans….giants get a two year pass for winning the super bowl…again.

but you obnoxious rocky-lovers are on the clock!

All it takes is some bad news about the Giants and all the vultures come out to feast. Its still killing you the Giants won the Super Bowl again isnt? the fact that Eli, the kid you like to call slow, is rocking two rings is sticking in your craw aint it? Well you haters can sit here and hope for more Giants misfortune, just remember how all this team responds to adversity and injuries. But while your waiting for that, take a knee, pucker up and KISS THE RING!

    Skinshail.

We know OUR owner is an idiot?

What does that make YOUR owner?

Dont be mad because our owner is smarter than yours.

Try to keep up with that delta in salary cap bitch.

Isn’t that the same injury the new Dallas reciever got the other day? Why do they always come in spurts? One guy tears his Achilles, another soon follows. One breaks his ribs, two other guys do right away. maybe its only perception, but they always seem to be trendy.

“Our money”? “We didn’t do anything wrong”? Aside from the fact that the Maras were not alone in this decision, IT AIN”T YOUR MONEY!!! YOU DON”T OWN THE REDSKINS!!!!!

“The response on the board for the previous story has demonstrated just how nervous the giants fans are about the situation.”

    1) Nicks hasn’t started a full 16 games in a season yet.
    2) Worse case, he misses the first game.
    3) NY has NEVER had such quality AND such depth in it’s WR corp ever.
    4) Last season, no team in the NFC had more missed games by players than the Giants. How did that turn out?

No question, NY will miss him IF he can’t play in the opener. He is the Giants best WR. But, and I’ll admit this is just a guess, I figure Martellus Bennett might just be a little pumped up to have a big game against his old team with the entire nation watching. 6″6″, 270, and on a one year contract. Bennett will walk out onto the field not just with a point to prove, but with dollar signs in his eyes. I’m sure his agent will drive home the need to take advantage of Nick’s absence (IF he’s gone) and to come up big in the first game of the entire season. Stage won’t be any bigger until postseason.

How exactly does having a part in succesfully getting cap dollars taken away from not one, but two division rivals make Mara an idiot? Sounds pretty damn smart to me. Did the owners collude? Yeah, probably. But an independent arbiter upheld the ruling so case closed. Jones and Snyder tried to manuever against the thinking of the other 30 owners. Did they have a legal right to do so? Again, yeah probably, but these are 30 powerful men who aren’t used to not having their way so Jones and Snyder got their wrists slapped…….. Oh and – “Give us our money back!!!! We didn’t do anything wrong.”? Really?? Who’s crying like a little girl?

  26. gmen4life33 says: May 25, 2012 12:35 AM

Prince had the seam injury, and never looked right last year. Plus chances are he can injury his foot/ankle after returning. We already have a second round pick (who will be a stud but still is a rookie) starting for us at wr b4 the injury…..can’t believe I’m about to say this….. But time to brin in Plax and TO in for workouts and pick up whichever seems right in the head

  29. zack2482 says: May 25, 2012 7:06 AM

God I hope Giants fans aren’t really counting on Martellis Bennett. Glad that lazy bum is on your team. You cant motivate that guy for nothing. And Cruz will be on lock down. There will be no gimmes since the weak link Newman is now gone…

  30. weaponx73 says: May 25, 2012 7:18 AM

You would think an aticle like this would make you feel bad about being a Giants fan but thanks to all the crying of our rivals I feel better. I mean it must really sucks when the best thing that happened to your team in years is that a guy on another team got injured.

A skins fan calling anyones owner an idiot wow what are you smoking.
Mr. Mara is part of one of the most loved and respected ownerships of any pro sports team.
The ball bares his fathers nick name.
He is one of the owners that helped settle the lock out.
He saw two teams that broke the rules and that was that btw how did spending all that money work out for your team?

And for all of you who say the Giants will not make the playoffs you maybe right but 2 Super Bowls in 5 years I am ok if they dont make the playoffs this year.

Giants are lucky eli’s stupid yet all we do is win Super Bowls the rest of the NFC east should be so stupid and lucky

“And Cruz will be on lock down. There will be no gimmes since the weak link Newman is now gone…”

You know what’s so funny about that comment –
    1) You haven’t seen your new secondary play one single snap and you automatically assume it can shut down one of the league’s most explosive WRs. Which proves you have NO idea what you’re talking about.
    2) If you go back and read all the comments from the post season; Atlanta fans, Green Bay fans, San Fran fans, and New England fans all claimed the same thing. Each team’s fans insisted Cruz would be shut down. The only team that came close was Atlanta and, well, we know how that turned out for the Falcons, don’t we.

    NY Daily News

“Cornerback Prince Amukamara broke the fifth metatarsal in his left foot on August 6 last season and did not return until Nov. 20. The injury continued to hamper him throughout 2011. Amukamara needed another minor procedure on the foot this offseason, and he was still not at full strength during Wednesday’s workout.”

  34. xtb3 says: May 25, 2012 9:23 AM

    @bigbluefan1

And Giants have now won MORE Super Bowls since 1984 than ANY other team has won since – 4 Super Bowls.

  35. zack2482 says: May 25, 2012 12:16 PM

    East96st,

Yeah I know what I’m talking about. Maybe you don’t remember how Newman played over the course of several years. Carr is an immediate upgrade and that is a fact. Even if we didn’t have Claiborne in the mix. We still have Jenkins available too. I bet you were the one that knew Cruz was going to be good too…yeah right!
