Vikings stadium deal becomes official

Champagne popping cork - 200136368-001 Getty Images

After months of premature cork-popping and unhatched-chicken-counting, it’s now official.  The Minnesota Vikings will be getting a new stadium.  In Minnesota.

The Minneapolis City Council voted Friday to ratify a Thursday vote to accept the deal that went from bill to law in the Minnesota Legislature earlier this month.

The project reached the finish line five weeks to the day after a trip by Commissioner Roger Goodell and Steelers owner Art Rooney II to the Land of 10,000 Lakes created sufficient concern that the Vikings, absent a new stadium, could soon join the Lakers in Los Angeles.

Once again, the measure passed City Council by a vote of 7-6.  Which is sort of fitting because it’s a reminder of the low scores of Vikings games played outdoors at Metropolitan Stadium, the pre-Metrodome home of the Vikings.

Speaking of outdoors, the only remaining question is whether the Wilfs will kick in enough extra money to put a retractable roof on the new venue.  You know, for those two games per year when it would make sense to slide it open.

Even then, sliding open the lid would sacrifice some of the sound that the Vikings so famously generated at the Metrodome.

Regardless of the amount of noise, the best news the franchise and its fans in Minnesota is that the team will be staying put, at least for another generation or so.  When the time will come to squeeze the public coffers for enough money to build the next new stadium.

Why would the NFL ever want a team in LA? It’s the perfect stalking horse.

How many stadium deals have NFL teams leveraged with LA?

suhnami, never. No owner in his right mind would move a team to a city that large that simply will not support a team long term. Your best and only shot is an expansion team. Or a Futbol team maybe.

What do you gain by giving it back to the taxpayers? In essence, they are giving it back to the tax payers in the form of sports entertainment much like when tax money is used for projects at the Guthrie or even trash collection by the road. The tax payer chooses whether or not they want to enjoy those things.

  28. schmokes says: May 25, 2012 2:14 PM

I’m just glad the packers don’t have to travel all the way to LA to get that free win every year.

Have they announced whether they have decided to name the stadium “Lambeau Field West” yet?

  29. thermalito says: May 25, 2012 2:16 PM

I never got the feeling the Vikings were a serious candidate for LA. The Rams are clearly the best fit for LA with the perfect storm of a bad stadium situation, broke city, low attendance, lukewarm fan interest, an uncommitted owner and an easy out clause for their lease in 3 years. Given the Rams 49 year history and still large fanbase in LA, no other team really makes sense. The Rams belong in LA anyway.

  30. dubblec1 says: May 25, 2012 2:18 PM

Yes!! Now get the retractable roof, require it to be open up until game time in order to chill it out, then close it to maximize the noise level. THAT would make this stadium unique to any other in the league and would make for true home field advantage.

Cold and loud – call it sensory depravation! C’mon Zygi, make it happen!

It has to have a roof – that was part of the bill. Wilf does, however, have the option to spend more to put retractable roof on – which I REALLY hope he does…sucks to be inside on beautiful Sept & Oct sundays.

FYI most of the trash collection is done either by people doing community service or businesses that sponsor a section of the roadway, and have volunteers from there organization go out and pick the trash up.

And gosh, our roads in Minnesota are fine. They certainly wouldn’t benefit from an upgrade of any kind.

I would like to personally thank all the face painters for hanging at the capital and city hall and singing Skol Vikings, for making this possible. Added benefit is you people can all get jobs and contribute to the tax base that is funding this beautiful piece of real estate that allows the face painters of the upper midwest to urinate and vomit in front of my door. And gives that way too old Canadian face painter something to do 8 weeks a year. How about a fight to the death for the job of Vikings mascot between Ragnar, the dirty biker, and Syd Davies. Complete opposite of the last time the Vikings were involved in a vote. There was a vote to decide if they would go to the Super Bowl in 2009 and loss that vote 31-28. Bout time they win won. Word is that Adrian Peterson was there for a ceremonial signing, but he fumbled the pen.

  46. fwippel says: May 25, 2012 2:59 PM

Why put a roof on the new stadium at all? I’m no Packer fan, but it’s not like the Packers have any trouble playing outdoors, or attracting high quality free agents to come up there and play.

Play the game outdoors on grass.

  47. kimber18 says: May 25, 2012 3:00 PM

Who wants to sit “outside” in Minnesota during the football season? The people behind their computers who also enjoy watching it on tv? Lets be realistic, I’d love a roof that can be opened and closed but its Minnesota I want to be comfortable. We’d get pre-season games and a few games in the un-seasonably warm falls that we’ve had lately till maybe mid October, maybe. Close the roof.

  48. ColfaxDenver says: May 25, 2012 3:05 PM

The Rams have enjoyed great support here through good and bad times, you are way off base on that BS.
Kroenke bought 40% of the team then and he knows the situation. If the CVC does not make the improvements he wants, he will lease year to year and build his own facility right here in the St. Louis area. That’s what he wants – his own building and he will get it.

The Wilfs will put a retractable roof on the new stadium because they want to attract a new MLS team to Minnesota. As others have mentioned, a roof is a requirement, whether fixed or retractable, because it will not just be a Vikings stadium, it will be used for other events year round that will bring revenue in to Minnesota and especially to Minneapolis.

I will be celebrating tonight along with my fellow Vikings fans. It’s a great day for the state of Minnesota, the city of Minneapolis, and the Vikings and their fans everywhere!

Good, glad this is over and Vikings fans don’t lose their team. For anyone who suggests it should be another team based on their perception of fans in seats. While some teams may have trouble filling the stands that does not directly equate to the number of true fans. Any city and their fans losing their team would be tough to swallow. Why do you think people want a team back in LA so badly? They want a team to cheer for that represents them. I think the only way to fix the LA team problem is to expand. Yes that would probably require more than one team and would be spread across several seasons, but the NFL could afford it. Give LA two teams, give Chicago and Dallas another, big markets who could afford two teams. Then give Canada two teams. Then look to two new cities to equal it all out and each division has 5 teams.

As great as a retractable roof sounds, it’s very expensive and not easy. It’s not like some sliding moon roof.
Plus in Winter if the roof was to be left open for cold game advantage, it could damage the infrastructure in that kind of weather.
Maybe they can find some type of glass or acrylic that looks like an open sky. Sheets of glass that large are very hard to manufacture and very heavy though…

This was as predictable as the sun rising. A Viking fan boasting about a stadium that isn’t even built yet. I have been pointing out for years the superiority-complex these fans have, a trait which makes them so annoying.

Jealousy breeds contempt. Every insult I read that is thrown in the direction of the Packers confirms it; here is another “fan” that wishes they were us.

    GO PACK!

With the new Oline, receivers, positive energy, OTA’S, new D coordinator, revamped secondary, a good LB coach, no more Shaincoe drops of TD’s or first down conversions the Vikings are going to be good. 10-6 is very attainable, being swept by the other north teams isn’t as likely. If the Vikings are terrible again then Fraizer & Musgrave and probably Spielman will be gone and they can hire a real staff. This season is a win/win either way.

What appears to be a superiority complex for Viking fans is actually an inferiority complex on the part of Packer fans.

How about a simple “Congrats Vikings fans on your favorite team getting a new stadium…..happy the rivalry will continue for years to come”. Is that so hard to say there Sconi? I think YOU need to get over yourselves.
