Wide receivers, defensive backs fight at Seahawks OTAs

Earl Thomas AP

Temperatures are cooler in Seattle than in most of the cities with NFL teams having Organized Team Activities this week, but things are getting heated between the Seahawks’ wide receivers and defensive backs.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that a skirmish broke out including several players in the two position groups.

It started when receiver Ben Obomanu and cornerback Jeremy Lane were tussling after the whistle blew on a play and had to be separated. Then safety Earl Thomas jumped in to help Lane, taking a swing at Obomanu. That led to receivers Doug Baldwin and Mike Williams jumping in to help Obomanu. (In the picture, wide receiver Deon Butler is pulling Thomas away from the fight.)

A few plays later, according to the News Tribune, safety DeShawn Shead “almost took Baldwin’s head off” on a pass over the middle.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he used the fight as an opportunity to talk to his players about competing hard without crossing the line.

“We’re asking these guys to work really hard, and it really matters to them and they really care,” Carroll said. “And they want to make their plays and their statements, and I don’t blame them one bit. But there is a line that you can cross, and that’s what we talked about afterward.”

And as much as Carroll likes competition, he draws the line at taking a swing at a teammate.

Too bad they don’t want to do Hard Knocks! Seems like a fun bunch.

I was watching the whole thing happen. The hit to Baldwin was like a Harrison cheap shot! At this rate they’ll beat each other before they beat the Niners.

Ha.. It’s funny how all these other teams have all this crazy drama, yet y’all like to point fingers at the Raiders and call us a joke franchise..

Guess its hard to see your own flaws from waaaay up on the high horse isnt it..

Especially if your swinging at a helmet. Moron in the middle of the pic deserves to get laid out.

Nah, I’m sure he’s quite happy letting his own players slide down a path of civil war and mutual destruction, all for the sake of competition.

“Then safety Earl Thomas jumped in to help Lane, taking a swing at Obomanu.”
    —————————————–

well from reading that statement of the fight, it seems like Thomas may have throw a sucker punch at Obomanu.

And as I said before when everyone was calling out and trash talking the Lions’ Organization and Titus Young, fights occur all the time between teammates, it’s nothing new.

  35. trollhammer20 says: May 25, 2012 9:57 PM

Glad to see some high spirits early in the process.

That said, I hope Carroll is serious about using it as an object lesson. Team committed WAY too many penalties last year, and they need to improve in that area this year. Say what you want about Holmgren, when he was coach, every year Seattle was near the top in fewest penalites.

I, for one, like it. I don’t want anyone to get hurt, but these aren’t your Tim Ruskell Seahawks. Those guys were a charity softball team masquerading around as an NFL team.

These John Schneider Seahawks are football players…And sometimes football players play so hard that it leads to a fight or two.

The Seahawks have never been known as a team with some grit to them, but it’s slowly happening and that I love.

You want to win in sports? Intimidate…Don’t be intimidated. Kudos to you John Schneider.

    Wrong about Doug Baldwin.

Torrey Smith had one less catch, over 50 more yards and 3 more TDs. Factor in Julio Jones, and of course AJ Green and Baldwin is clearly not #2.
