@cedarman you are prob the funniest dude on planet earth...you must be the one guy I've ever seen with an alex jersey on..... it laughable for you to mention smith in with bradshaw plunkett and vick.. HE WAS DRAFTED IN 2005!! and he is nowhere near as talented as any of the qb you named. he's had one non suck season 7 years.
last I checked terry bradshaw didnt have 6 years to be terrible..nor vick for that matter. but when those guys came into their own they were special players not AVERAGE GAME MANAGERS AFRAID TO THROW THE FRIGGIN BALL. He's had 7 years in a crap division and has done just about squat.

Yeah Smith sucks right?

The 4k yard club from last season...

Drew Brees,
Tom Brady
Matthew Stafford
Eli Manning
and Aaron Rodgers

Okay let's put this in the correct perspective.

The QBs' listed that all threw for more yardage than Alex Smith... Drew Brees(24th ranked Defense), Tom Brady(31st ranked Defense), Matthew Stafford(23rd ranked Defense), Eli Manning(27th ranked Defense) and Aaron Rodgers(Dead last Defense). Coincidence?

Interceptions for... Drew Brees(14), Tom Brady(12), Matthew Stafford(16), and Eli Manning(16) with only Aaron Rodgers having under 10 picks. Coincidence?

Then throw in the 9ers +38 turnover ratio?

Smith is much better than people wish to admit. He protected the ball like a champ and never put the Defense on their heels. You do that your Defense has a lot of real estate to work with and this Defense was opportunistic to reward Smith with an average starting point of our 40yard line instead of 20 or less. For which Smith and Akers rewarded the Defense with less time on the field allowing them to be fresher.

The Defensive rankings don't lie. None of the QBs' that threw for 4k yards would have that statistic right now if their Defenses were ranked between 10 to 20. Great gaudy stats almighty but I'd rather have Wins. Only Green Bay had more Wins than the 9ers did and they got knocked out of the Playoffs by themselves more than the Giants.

Then look at the WR Corps from each team. All of them YAC producing Receivers. Who besides Davis was the consistent YAC producer? Not a single one of them. Every one of the QBs' listed had a deep Receiver Corps to throw to. Matt Stafford had 6'5" DJ Megs to throw to. When you have THAT guy on your team makin you look good, you're gonna throw for big yards.

You shehawk fans should chill til your team can put together a winning Record. You honestly think it's gonna be a cakewalk playin the 9ers? They weren't the number 4 Defense in the league by accident. Smith didn't turn over the ball putting them on their heels. I don't care who your QB is, they will turn over the ball and the 9er D gonna take it away from em.

Shewhacks takin the Division HAH! In a pig's eye they will.

That's why Baalke and Harbaugh went and picked up Moss, Manningham and Jenkins. No more singling up #15 to take away the Passing game.

deetrain11... "Alex Smith was given MUCH more time to succeed than ANY QB in the HISTORY of the NFL!!!"

Thank you Mr. NFL Historian for you keen insight.

Just thought I might point out that there are at least 4 other QBs' who had as long if not longer.

Terry Bradshaw- Healthy season for healthy season Bradshaw actually got more time to come into his own. Steelers fans wanted his head on a steel pike for years. Not one or two years either.

Jim Plunkett
Steve Young
Mike Vick

The last 3 guys may not have stayed with the same teams but healthy season for healthy season they got longer chances.

I'm not even comparing Smith to any of them, just saying that your assertion that Smith has gotten more chances than anyone is categorically false.

His rookie season consisted of 9 games and he got his skull kicked in behind a toilet paper OLine. Just like the rest of the guys in the 9er QB Corps.

His second year he showed pretty good improvement over his rookie season and was the first 9er to EVER take every snap in the game. This is a team that has a history of solid QB play from the likes of Y.A. Tittle, Frankie Albert, John Brodie, Joe Montana, Steve Young and yes even Jeff Garcia. When you set a mark like that on a team with a 58 year history that means something. It's not Brett Favre Iron Man but for a Sophmore player taking snaps behind TP OLine the 9ers put on the field it says quite a bit about your toughness.

His 3rd season is where it went off the rails. Taking one too many hits behind a garbage OLine will get you killed eventually. Not even playing half a season was 2-1 before the injury. That injury sidelined him for 2 years. So his career wasn't even 5 years when he had a pretty solid 2009 campaign where he contributed 10 TDs' to Vernon Davis' break out season of 13 Scores. Until Gronk broke the record Davis was tied for most TDs' from a Tight End in NFL history. That would not have happened with Pie thrower Shaun Hill Starting all 16 games.

2010 was abysmal but that was more due to the ineffective Head Coach prowling the sideline like he used to as a Linebacker for Da Bears. I like Sing, he's just in over his head as a Head Coach. Smith got injured in Carolina and that was Sing's excuse to start Troy Smith who is no longer in the NFL and to apply the Butch Davis QB carousel technique which is such a proven strategy for winning at the professional level right? Such an awesome strategy for team cohesiveness.

2011 and 5 years later (off the team due to IR for 2) Smith puts in a pedestrian 13-3 takes his team to the Playoffs and puts them on his shoulders to beat Drew Brees at his own game and take the 9ers to the Championship where he put up mirrorlike statistics to the eventual Super Bowl winner Eli Manning.

Let's correct this thought process of the 9ers going after Manning. Didn't happen. Prior to his workout he personally called the 9ers. They'd have been stupid not to fly across the country and see what is what. They threw their hat in the ring yes. But let's be honest, the only reason Manning called them was because his agent(who happens(ed) to be Smith's agent) had him call them to drive up his contract stock. With only 2 teams in the hunt that was not going to happen. Especially when neither team was considered to be a playoff contender. The 9ers had the best chance of duplicating their success. Did they go after Manning or was Manning using them? Common sense tells us that Manning was never fully invested to going to the 9ers. So it's ignorant to use it when knocking Smith.

But no, sorry not the longest chance for a QB in the NFL. If anything it's more like an NFL team wanted to see SOME return on the 50 million dollar investment they committed to after they drafted him. Smith even took a paycut to stay with the organization and played on a 1 year deal last year. So it's not like the 9ers were blindly making offers to keep him around. But if you were a 9er fan you'd know all this. ;)

Smith played well last year, newton played better. in the end, they both watched the SB at home.

I dont think alex smiths's cam comment meant anything but like always u have to be a little more proffesional with ur comments cuz the media will take anything and run with it... But this has proven all the cam haters still exist.... This kid came in and proved everyone wrong with his performance haters and supporters.... The difference between cam and alex smith is alex is a game manager and cam is a game changer... Its proven that alex smith has to be in a offense that caters to his style in order to have success but the knock on came was that the colleges offense would not transfer into the nfl and look at him now... He is gonna bring a skill set to the game that the elite qbs cant and proven that he can sling the ball better than we thought with a little more experience and less ints we may have a great career to witness

Let's see 2011 QB ratings ...
Alex Smith was rated #9 ... made the playoffs
Cam Newton was rated #15 .... no playoffs
Andy Dalton was rated #20 ... made the playoffs
Tim Tebow was rated #28 ... made the playoffs

Yes Cam Newton and Mike Vick are GREAT fantasy QBs ... lots of points with their rushing yds and TDs but in the end it all comes down to winning and it's only a matter of time when all those hits takes it's toll on those rushing QBs like Vick found out last year.

Have you guys watched any SBs games over the years ... drop back QBs win Super Bowls period.

When the panthers were winning and newton was playing well, then cam newton was great and that’s all you see in the highlights. But when they lost, when he played poorly, he was on the bench with a towel over his head. I understand you have to play. Michael Vick is exciting and donavon mcnabb was exciting and tony romo and Vince young and mark Sanchez and joe flacco. But it also takes leadership, Eli manning, tom Brady, Ben rothlisburger, Arron Rodgers, brad Johnson, Kurt Warner, Trent dilfer, drew breez have all won superbowls over last 15 years with different talent levels, but are also all leaders. I would say that Alex smith and mathew stafford play the part of leaders much better than a cam newton or tony romo

Hey let’s play dumb analogies game.

If stats are stats, why did the Jets trade for Tebow?

-------------------------------------

It's because Mark Sanchez stinks up the field and Tebow gives them a better chance to win.

Sanchez career passer rating: 73.2
Tebow career passer rating: 75.1

So better passer rating, and better rushing rating. I think Cam Newton personally is an awesome football player, and would be even better if he stopped making the same costly decisions and not playing as good in the 3rd-4th quarters. Ryan Tannehill did that in college, and half of the Aggies staff got fired for the poor results.

All y'all can play the ignorant "Who would you rather have" game.

I look at it like this...

17/5 vs. 20/17

Newton cost his team games as much as he won them.

Smith won 5 Regular season games in come from behind fashion.

The Defense did it's job. That's what they get paid to do. That's how it's SUPPOSED to be for all 32 teams.

But the reality is that Newton put his Defense on an Island more than he helped them. Where Smith helped his Defense and his Defense helped him.

I'll take going all the way to the NFC Championship game and losing over 6-10 and having NO shot any day of the year. Anyone that is suggesting that Smith was just along for the ride is talkin out their a55.
