IFL team dumps Terrell Owens

Receiver Terrell Owens can’t get back in to the NFL.  And now he’s out of the IFL.

The Allen Wranglers have announced that Owens has been released.

It’s hardly an amicable split.  The statement takes multiple shots at Owens for not having the right level of commitment.

“Our fans are amongst the best in the league and it is impossible to maintain a player when even our fans notice and comment on a player’s lack of effort both on and off the field,” owner Jon Frankel said.  “We need to do what is best for this team, our fans and this community.”

Team president and co-owner Tommy Benizio chimed in, too.  With gloves fully off.

“It is difficult to look other players on this team in the eyes and tell them that being a team player is important . . . that giving it your all on the field every night is our expectation, when another member of this team is not operating by these standards,” Benizio said. ”The proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back for Mr. Owens was his no-show to a scheduled appearance at a local children’s hospital with other Wrangler players and coaches.  It is not the desire of the Allen Wranglers’ organization to disappoint fans by having our most notable player miss a scheduled appearance.”

Owens signed a much-hyped deal with the Wranglers, giving him a piece of the team.  But it paid Owens only for home games.  His participation in road games hinged on the willingness of the other team to sweeten the pot.

For the season, Owens appeared in eight games, catching 35 passes for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns.

And so likely ends the football career of Terrell Owens.  Unless he can successfully find a way to blame this on the media.  Or at least to blame someone other than himself.

  1. how do you get cut by the team you have majority share in must be the end of the road

  2. T.O. made $80 million during his career. Now he gets cut from a minor league Arena team, is bankrupt, owes child support to several kids he has no relationship with and apparently, has little friends. My heart goes out to him.

    Not.

  3. When T.O. gets hungry maybe he should try a slice or ten of humble pie.
Ya, I know, aint gonna happen!

  4. That quote is VERY telling. He’s not changed. Not one bit.

But… HEY! Let’s bring him back, he’s a changed man!!!

I’d love to see how he’s gonna handle his baby mama debt now… smh… Used to LOVE TO… but he’s sunken to the lowest of the lows on my “lost respect” list.

I’m ashamed that he suckered me in with his crying on his show… about his grandmother with Alzheimers. I thought he was a human.

  5. The guy has sabotaged his career. It’s the same story wherever he goes. What a waste of talent.

I seriously think he has mental health issues and doesn’t see reality. He also blames everyone but himself for his downfall.

  6. Alright schiano, brinb him in, put him opposite vincent jackson. One year deal, cut him at any time…why the hell not? Of course hes a big ol drama baby, but you cant deny the athletic ability this old man still has.

  7. How can they cut TO and slam him? Doesn’t he like…own part of the team? How does THAT work?

  8. Basically, he found out that this team wasn’t going to help him get back in the NFL, they found out that Owens wasn’t the attendance and financial draw that management wanted, and now they have gone separate ways. Of course the Wranglers will say he was trouble, they don’t want to look like bigger fools. I’m upset that TO decide to not show up to the charity events and come through on his obligations, but there are 2 sides to every story. I still think he could be an effective #2 or #3 on a team. I think he would be good on Miami, Houston (who are looking for more WRs), New Orleans, Cleveland, and a couple of other teams.

  9. Wow – it’s pretty messed up when the minor leagues don’t want you around. I’m guessing TO will have to go “Kenny Powers” on us and play south of the border for a while……

  10. Somebody help me out. What has this guy done, since Dallas, that is stopping him from signing onto a new team? People keeping talking about all the stuff he’s done if Philly and Dallas and saying he’s a bad guy. Like he hasn’t changed since then. Seriously, I want to know.

  11. I thought he left Cincy w/ alright stats and good terms. Better than Chad even. I don’t recall if he was a cancer in that locker room. He’s still in good standing w/ Carson. As a Niner fan, I found it amusing all the stunts he pulled w/ the Ravens, then eventually the Eagles & Cowboys. But w/ the Bills I thought he was alright there as well. It’s amazing that the Redskins never took a shot at him. Oh well. RIP T.O.’s career.

  12. As a Texans fan, those stats are still better than what Kevin Walter produced last season opposite Andre Johnson so Terrell opposite Andre needs to happen if the Texans want to contend for the Super Bowl. The Texans should sign him to a non guaranteed deal like the 49ers gave Randy Moss to make him earn the #2 wide receiver spot in training camp. His stats say he is healthy and can contribute at an NFL level.

I’m guessing that you have never managed employees before or are not really a Bucs fan.

  14. Technically, Owens did fulfill his contractual obligations.

GM Drew Pearson said that he was there for publicity and Owens technically did that.

The only way Owens wins is if he successfully sues the Wranglers for wrongful termination or for money not being paid to him.

Still, I’m still pissed at Owens because I was one of his fans. Now I am ashamed to be one because he got himself into this mess when he didn’t need to.

  15. For the record, Owens parted ways with Drew Rosenhaus.

Maybe, this IFL situation (and possible fiasco for Owens) might be a reason why they’re both not together anymore.

  16. It just shows you what happens when you allow your ego to be the main thing in your life. TO had a golden opportunity in Philadelphia and blew it. A few years back, I saw an ad on the Walt Whitman Bridge using Dick Vermeil. If TO he would have stuck with the program, the city of Philadelphia would still be paying him just like Vermeil.

  17. “The proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back for Mr. Owens was his no-show to a scheduled appearance at a local children’s hospital with other Wrangler players and coaches.”

He doesn’t even know his own kids, why would he care about the kids in a hospital?

No, his stats say he can get open against IFL-grade d-backs.

  19. So he averaged about 52 yards recieving per game. Not good. Unless maybe you’re the 3rd WR. Was he?

But then he scored 10 TDs in 8 games, which sounds like a pretty damn good stat.

So what does this mean- that they only threw to him down near the goal line?

  20. That’s wild… The other team pays to have your best player play in their stadium.

This IFL has “legitimate” written all over it.

  21. TO is like an old west gunfighter who has shot himself in the foot so many times the other guy doesn’t even need to show up with bullets in his gun. It’s too late for TO to change his loser image. He’s stuck with it and he’ll just continue to prove why from here on out.

  22. I’d rather my team (Steelers) go out and sign Anthony Gonzalez, rather than sign TO.
Owens had multiple chances and blew it every time, I pity him not, he was told repeatedly that his ego was a problem yet he ignored the warnings.
The media didn’t help either since they propped him up just to defile him when the chance was there.

This kind of thing ALWAYS happens to WRs:
    – Andre ‘Bad Moon” Rison
    – T.O.
    – Randy Moss
    – Keyshawn Johnson
    – Chad Johnson
    – Marvin Harrison
    – etc

  23. He’s not a criminal or really really mean guy, but he’s pretty stupid!!!

He has poor judgement, gets himself in the wrong position too often, and now has the decision making ability of a 12 year old!!!!

    Good luck in life buddy!!!

  24. How does THIS work. Tommy Benizio is the commish of the IFL! I know cause I live in the town of the reigning champs and Benizio screwed us over in 2009 (long story for a different day).

  25. Well he was busy laughing at people dying, while kicking dogs, and telling girls Santa doesnt love them because they’re fat. Really, I expected more from a former Buffalo Bill.

  26. At long last perhaps he will find the spiritual and psychological help he so truly needs. He ain’t right in the head.

  27. How is there any way to look at that downward spiral, and believe the guy has the fortitude to live to be an old man? Sad. But can you really see there being any light at the end of his tunnel, with whatever demons and mental disorders control his psyche?

  28. Oh yes, the next time you need an image change change your clothes, your “I love me some me” and “too cool for school” lingo, and your damn glasses!!!!

No more hats either!!!! If you at least dressed like a businessman no one would badmouth you!!!!

Jeez!!! You’re so stupid you don’t even realize that appearance matters too!!!

You know wants an image change, but dresses too stupidly to the point where he can change it??? Dennis Rodman!!!!!

You want opposite example??? Ricky Williams!!!!!!! He has no dreadlocks or beard!!!!!! Look at him now!!!! Nothing wrong with him!!!!

  29. ESPN states, “Owner Jon Frankel said Owens’ ownership stake has been terminated because he violated his contract.”

And for those talking about his stats sounding good, you have to remember that we are talking about Arena Football. They normally score 6 to 8 TDs every game. I mean there are two other receivers on his own team that had more TDs than he did.

  30. I know TO has been a jerk at times, but some of you guys sound like you’re hoping he kills himself. Sheesh.

  31. Nothing says commitment like missing a scheduled appearance at children’s hosp. Stay classy to and maybe one day your get some sympathy for your self inflicted hardships . . .

  32. He was a pro on talent but never a true pro. jerry rice had all pro talent but a hall of fame attitude on and off the field. amazing T.O. never had a clue.

  33. So sorry, you silly simpletons.

The RAIDERS will have no part of T.O.

Big Reg is in charge now, the RAIDERS have a good, young WR rotation. Owens is not needed.

  34. 35 receptions and 10 touchdowns in 8 games. Correct me if I’m wrong but don’t average receivers in the IFL record the same stats in about 2 games?

  35. Cue the quivering lower lip, the crocodile tears (hidden behind the Kool Moe Dee shades,….”That’s my receiver right there, that’s my receiver.”
But seriously, this turd has shown that once he realized that there is no hope of BS-ing this team, he reverts back to his true self. Selfish, unprofessional and uncaring. Talented, without a doubt,…..but talent only gets you so far. All he wanted to do all along was to use this team as a springboard back to the NFL. When he realized that his NFL career had disappeared, his “commitment” to the IFL disappeared with it.
    Stay classy TO

  36. I’d still take him in Oakland, it just wouldn’t hurt to try it out. We would be able to get him for cheap and if anything, he has repoir (sp?) with Palmer. Also, our WRs might see his work ethic (hopefully not his attitude) and pick it up on their end.

Ya, I know, aint gonna happen!

T.O. is quoted as saying.”GET YOUR POPCORN READY!!….. I’m HUNGRY????”

  38. This is the way the universe will end — not with a bang but with a whisper.

The guy is his own worst enemy.

  39. For starters, I in no way in hell would wish bad on anyone, or ill will on anyone. T.O. is an embarrassment to himself, his family, and to all African American males in this world. For one, clown, you have been blessed to play a GAME, make millions, and live the life. I work in the health care profession and here, I can’t even take my kids to Disneyland. Attitude is everything, and as you can see it is something he just does not possess. That is it, end of the road, and peace. The NFL, NBA, MLB, even the CBA, are better off to not even let clowns such as yourself anywhere near any league.

  40. He never belonged in the IFL anyway, he was just proving that he recovered from the knee injury
