Dashon Goldson is looking for Weddle money

Dashon Goldson AP

The bigger stories out of San Francisco (which focus on topics like the gushing over Randy Moss and the contention that the team didn’t pursue Peyton Manning, even if it did) have obscured a development regarding the lack of developments between the team and franchise-tagged safety Dashon Goldson.

Our corporate colleague at CSNBayArea.com, Matt Maiocco, recently reported that Goldson wants Eric Weddle money — five years, $40 million.

As the team’s franchise player, Goldson can at any time sign a one-year, $6.2 million tender offer.

Goldson is the only 49er who has not participated in the team’s offseason workouts.  Though few franchise players attend before signing a contract, franchise players are permitted to do so, if they so choose.

One of the worst safeties in the league last season when it came to coverage (by the numbers)

He makes the occasional big hit, and a few of his interceptions weren’t instinctual plays, just tipped off the hands of other defensive players.

    I’ll pass.

    Weddle’s deal is 5 years 40 million

Really good player, not Ronnie Lott, not 40 million

He wants a Weddle Mo than they willing to give.

C’mon S.F., get his Dashon the dotted line.

Unfortunetly i see Goldson with another team in 2013.

To think Goldson was a free agent nobody wanted last year. Good job not locking him up to a cheaper deal management

    Eric who?

Oh ya, that one all-pro safety that everyone criticized AJ Smith for drafting.

  10. norcalmafia says: May 30, 2012 10:22 PM

Dashon is on his way to bieng a top safety in the league but 8 years is a long time..Hes probably the hardest hitting safety in the league and picked Brees pocket in the playoffs…

So Weddle is making $5mil a season and Goldson will make $6mil next year yet a veteran who should be playing to win his 1st EVER superbowl ring feels disrespected making $7mil next season. Yeah Ed Reed , you are selfish and have one more season as a Raven! Finish your career for money and you will not win a superbowl.

    It’s a 5 year contract…$8mil a year. Yaaaa….

I was going to say…the 9ers would do $40mil/8 years all day.

He should sign the contract from last year…$25mil/5 years. Get them up to $30mil and be happy.

He plays a great center field no matter what these posers say!

Glad they aren’t doing $8mil/yr though…he must be smoking!!

Goldson is a natural SS, not a FS. He takes poor angles on backside pursuit, and his coverage abilities are definitely below average. His strengths are run support, hard hitting and forcing fumbles. Isn’t that exactly what you want your SS to do? 5 years/$40m is far too much to be paying a guy who should be playing strong, not free. Personally I wouldn’t even pay a FS that much money unless he was one of the top 2-3 ballhawks in the league. Get real, Dashon.

a safety wanting CB $.. unless you are ed reed, lott.. good luck w that.. Eri Weddle is being overpaid.. i do see his point though, wedddle’s stats are almost identical to goldson.. the ony problem is that the niners FO are not as dumb as AJ smith down in SD.

  16. disp2 says: May 30, 2012 11:22 PM

Easily the most overrated player on the Niners defense. No way is he worth $8mil/season. Loved his huge hits, but it’s no secret that he and Whitner were the 2 weakest links on the defense. Seemed like every game the defense would be dominating then once a game, every game, the other team scores some long touchdown with blown safety play.

next year we will probably lose a few veterans. we need to keep our solid players so we can control the west. pay the man.

They offered him 5 years 25 mil with like 18 mil guaranteed + escalators. That isn’t exactly cheap. The rest of the league balked and he came back for chump change. Nobody will pay him 8 mil and if they will, well then they can have him

  19. nannymcsack says: May 31, 2012 12:07 AM

the patriots would likely take him next year for a weddle less than that.

  20. scalfor3 says: May 31, 2012 12:53 AM

the pats (and their awful secondary) passed on this guy. he had an ok year (but look at profootballfocus.com for the actual stats) on the leagues number 1 D. not worth anything close to a big money deal (let alone weddle money)

  21. maximusprime107 says: May 31, 2012 2:36 AM

    Yeah and Weddle is overpaid

  22. randallflagg52 says: May 31, 2012 3:19 AM

    This guy is delusional.

  23. kenny328usa says: May 31, 2012 4:50 AM

Good luck hammer, Eric Weddle isn’t even worth Eric Weddle money

  24. 49erstim says: May 31, 2012 8:31 AM

Gotta pay him well, but not that well. I like Weddle, but I don’t think safeties are worth that money with few exceptions (Ed Reed, Troy Polumolecules :-p ). I do love the ferocity he brings and the attitude. Don’t blame him for wanting a multi-year deal though.

Looking at what this dude wants moneywise after one season, I am glad my team either passed on him because they didn’t want to play him what he wanted or he passed on them because they didn’t want to pay him what he wanted. Because even if they had signed him to a one year last year, he’d be a problem this year to get re-signed and they’d be right back in the same boat.

Totally agree. Cant depend on him being solid against the passing teams the def will face this year.

The niners were NOT the number one defense last year…

Also I’m sure their stats got a big boost by playing in the NFC West, so take any of their rankings with a grain of salt.

I actually think Shawntae Spencer might have made a decent FS. Better coverage skills by far than Goldson. Do you remember Merton Hanks? Free Safety is a pass coverage position. All you need is solid tackling and you will do fine. We have 2 poor-covering, SS’s in the defensive backfield. We need a little balance.

You can pay any number of meat-head rookie SS’s to pretend to play FS and blow coverages. And I guarantee the rooks will play as hard as Goldie and require a lot less $ to do it.
