I actually think Shawntae Spencer might have made a decent FS. Better coverage skills by far than Goldson. Do you remember Merton Hanks? Free Safety is a pass coverage position. All you need is solid tackling and you will do fine. We have 2 poor-covering, SS’s in the defensive backfield. We need a little balance.

You can pay any number of meat-head rookie SS’s to pretend to play FS and blow coverages. And I guarantee the rooks will play as hard as Goldie and require a lot less $ to do it.

The niners were NOT the number one defense last year…

Also I’m sure their stats got a big boost by playing in the NFC West, so take any of their rankings with a grain of salt.

Looking at what this dude wants moneywise after one season, I am glad my team either passed on him because they didn’t want to play him what he wanted or he passed on them because they didn’t want to pay him what he wanted. Because even if they had signed him to a one year last year, he’d be a problem this year to get re-signed and they’d be right back in the same boat.

Gotta pay him well, but not that well. I like Weddle, but I don’t think safeties are worth that money with few exceptions (Ed Reed, Troy Polumolecules :-p ). I do love the ferocity he brings and the attitude. Don’t blame him for wanting a multi-year deal though.

They offered him 5 years 25 mil with like 18 mil guaranteed + escalators. That isn’t exactly cheap. The rest of the league balked and he came back for chump change. Nobody will pay him 8 mil and if they will, well then they can have him

Goldson is a natural SS, not a FS. He takes poor angles on backside pursuit, and his coverage abilities are definitely below average. His strengths are run support, hard hitting and forcing fumbles. Isn’t that exactly what you want your SS to do? 5 years/$40m is far too much to be paying a guy who should be playing strong, not free. Personally I wouldn’t even pay a FS that much money unless he was one of the top 2-3 ballhawks in the league. Get real, Dashon.

One of the worst safeties in the league last season when it came to coverage (by the numbers)

He makes the occasional big hit, and a few of his interceptions weren’t instinctual plays, just tipped off the hands of other defensive players.
