I know it seems like by holding out he’s not honoring a deal he agreed to, but the team has every right to stop honoring the deal when they choose the player should as well. If the system were like baseball where the player is entitled to the contract if the team cuts him, it would be a different story.

From a Jets fan perspective, I almost hope he does hold out.

We cant take the cap hit involved in trading him this year, so a new deal would have to be done, ensuring a longer stay for Darrelle in NY.

Wouldn’t be pretty, but I’d take it.

I don’t think they can afford not to sign him!He may be the best corner in the league. I don’t see the offense being anymore than a grind it out and don’t turn the ball over team. So they will need a strong D. All 3 of the other teams improved in their division in the off season. Bills grabbed some nice free agents and had a decent draft. I highly doubt The Hoodie will definitely improve the Pats D. And Miami gave the Jets Tony Sporano. All that being said…
I love that the Yets keep the distractions going! The Yets will suck and Rex will get fired …CANT WAIT!!

And the reason u say it’s asinine is exactly why it isn’t, because it sounds absolutely ridiculous when compared to the real world. It SHOULD BE ridiculous in this context too, but for some reason fans think it isn’t. Guess what? Anyone anywhere with a few exceptions can get fired at any time for almost no reason and ABSOLUTELY CAN if they can’t do the job they were hired to do or don’t show up to work, that’s the nature of our society and business structure…it’s called capitalism. Big businesses hold most if not all of the power, why do we apply a different standard to the NFL? It’s how everyone in this country’s employment works, why are these players so different than incredibly talented lawyers or marketing personnel who suddenly underperform or stop showing up? It isn’t, players need to live by the standards of every other incredibly high paid job in this country, which in fact isnt much different than the lower paid jobs. And striking, btw, is a completely different scenario and really has no bearing here

If contracts mean nothing then why have them then? Just play year to year. It is ironic and extremely hypocritical that these jackasses whine and bitch about getting franchised tagged and getting a huge payday for one year….then turn around and threaten to hold out when there is time and money left on the long-term deal they wanted and signed.

I understand what you are saying but using Manning as an example only proves the point I was making. Peyton actually got a better deal in Denver and made $26.4M from the Colts last year without putting on any pads. The loyalty was shown by the Colts and then it came time to make another $28M gamble on a player that nobody knew could even play. He was cut and somebody thought he could still play and paid him. If a player gets cut and never gets another shot, that means he could no longer play anymore and therefor was no longer living up to the performance standards the contract was based on.

Not exactly. The team won’t cut him IF the player continues to play at the same level as when he signed. Sometimes there are financial issues that can’t be met and players do get traded or cut but those guys will always get picked up by a new team if they can still play well.

Revis is not any better than he was when he signed so a raise is ridiculous because he is already well payed and it is much more than $6.75M for the next two years when you factor in prorated bonuses, etc. Players always forget that part of their salaries at the back end of the deal have already been paid so they cry about not being loved or that they should be the highest paid…

If he does hold out, I hope they let his butt rot while he pays the team that daily fine. Ungrateful punk.

Peyton Manning signed a monster deal. The next year he’s a Bronco. I’m just saying it goes both ways. The team signed that contract too. They would pay them and they can still just cut a player the year after they drew up that contract. Who’s really honoring the contract?
You’re right about finances and all that. But, a smart owner will account for that. Which they do. They know what they’re doing. They can cut a veteran and get a younger cheaper version. Throw some money at them upfront to make them happy and cut them later.

I hate how people jump on players for holding out. Contracts mean very little in the NFL compared to other leagues and teams new M.O. is to run guys into the ground on the cheap and then cast them away. There is 0 loyalty towards players and the holdout is the only bargaining tool for the players. It might sound excessive but Revision is worth well more than 6.5. The Jets will try to slime their way to the cheapest option and Revis will be called the bad guy by idiotic fans and slave owners.

Revis is the best CB in the NFL. He shuts down the best WR’s in the NFL (Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson).

Having said that, the Jets have to call his bluff this time. Does Revis really want to sit out for the entire 2012 season? I don’t he wants to miss this season.

The Jets have to stand firm and make Revis either honor his contract (which is a very good and fair contract) or tell him to enjoy watching the Jets play on television.

Revis will lose a lot more than the Jets is he sits out in 2012. He doesn’t benefit in any way by holding out for the 2nd time in 2 years.

The Jets will play 16 games in 2012 with or without Revis. The fans won’t support Revis this year.

End of story.
