Osi Umenyiora expected to hit free agency in 2013

The Giants and Osi Umenyiora announced Friday that they agreed to a restructured contract that will effectively keep the long-disgruntled defensive end in New York this season.

Loose details of the deal have trickled out, though nothing concrete has been confirmed. NFL Network’s Albert Breer reported late Friday that Umenyiora likely got a one-year deal worth in the range of $7 million to $7.5 million in 2012. Umenyiora is expected to receive a signing bonus of about $3 million, with a voidable year in 2013 to spread out the salary cap hit.

Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger has similar numbers, citing a person informed of the talks between Umenyiora and the Giants. Keep in mind that the financial details we know about are based on recent discussions, and not necessarily the exact numbers Umenyiora and the Giants ultimately agreed upon.

Regardless, it sounds like Umenyiora received what amounts to a one-year contract. He’ll play out this season with a raise on his old $3.975 million salary, and be free to test the unrestricted free agent market next spring.

He’ll be a Redskin or Patriot in 2013.

He is everything that is wrong in today’s nfl. The guy restructured a few year ago with a front loaded contract, now when his salary goes down he complains again??? Same with revis… There needs to be stiffer penalties for players not playing out their contract…

I believe he should and will get a similar deal to Jason Babin … Both are great against the pass and not so great against the run and they are right around the same age

So he basically go a $3 mil bonus to play this year at the same salary?

onthewagonsince90 – what should happen to owners that cut players under contract when they no longer want to pay them that much? After you answer me that, explain the difference between the two situations. Thanks, boozy.

Why would the Giants give Osi a raise without getting another year out of him!?

  10. kingcarlbanks says: Jun 2, 2012 3:04 PM

Jerry Reese and TC wont let Osi walk unless they are sure the can replace his production, plus for depth purposes. Osi will get a new deal in N.Y, Giants will draft another stud DE, and the beat will go on for Big Blue..

I’m certain he’ll be a real hot commodity. I’m certain that countless teams will be tripping over each other to sign a self centered, egomaniac who perpetually relentlessly complains about his contract even when rewarded with a new one and who time and time again illustrates a ME ME ME attitude.

Now give Victor his money !!

I just hope Osi didn’t get any of Cruz’s money?

Reese would be making a big mistake if Victor didn’t get his $7 mill minimum just to keep Osi happy.
