Bad press is expected. The follow up stories were irresponsible at best. There was no indication Fairley had character issues that would lead to off-field problems…none. All the red flags were about motivation and work ethic, yet more than a few stories claimed they saw these off-field problems coming with Fairley with nothing but a hunch that he was lazy.

Bad press is one thing, bad journalism is another.

The consistency in reporting is a joke. The Lions were stretched over the coals for ignoring the so called red flags when Fairley dropped in their laps at 13. After his arrest their were links to all of those supposedly waiving the flags that Fairley had character issues. Lots of very proud “insiders” quick to point out their great prognostication. Until you actually learn that these red flags had nothing to do with off-field problems, but about being lazy and hard to motivate. Fairley went on to recover and play through pain proving these red flags were wrong. With egg on their face the insiders loosly raised these flags again as an indication that the Lions front office ignored known problems and should be held responsible for Fairley’s arrests.

nick, there’s one key difference. I’m pretty sure that if Walmart fires, you, you can still get a comparable job at Target or some other retailer. If the NFL “fires” you, there is no comparable job, certainly not in this country (the CFL is probably the most comparable, and, of course, they’re in Canada). To essentially prevent someone from earning a living in his chosen profession for one mistake seems a bit harsh.

All you have to do is abide by the rules of the NFL. If you dont …you will be fired forever.
No second chances..A chance of a lifetime thrown
away because you cant control yourself.
If you work at Walmart..you have to pass drug test..if not ..you dont work.
If the NFl will have ..0..Tolerance…this kind of conduct will stop..or Go to work some where
else….

Most who post here have driven at THREE TIMES the legal blood alcohol content limit one year after being popped for another DUI? I doubt it, not unless I stumbled onto an Alcoholics Anonymous blog by mistake. Once is a mistake, twice is a potentially serious alcohol abuse problem. The dude needs to seek counseling, and seek it now, before he kills somebody next time.

Who cares? It is ultimatly about putting out a good product and making lots of MONEY! You can whine all you want about character and integrity, but that was out of the game LONG ago, basically when agents became involved and it no longer was a game, but a business. We will still all watch and the NFL knows it.

Basically something like this before you have a contract is about the dumbest thing he could do. Now he has lost any kind of leverage (whatever the dude in the same slot last year got paid) and will have a bunch if provisions in his contract so the Jags can cover themselves incase something else happens.

Funny part is I recall people saying he wasn’t a headcaselike Dez….so much for that. Besides think Dez finally has his head on straight…..dude is going to be beastmode this year.

I wonder just how many posters on this site have ever gotten a DUI or maybe an underage consumption?

This is an error, but let’s not blow this out of proportion and say the guy deserves to get dropped out of the league or given away for a bag of dorritos.

How about Khan has a genuine sit down with him and his agent everyone makes a lapse in judgement from time to time and that they are willing to stick with him. But in return they need a good faith gesture to show them that Blackmon clearly understands he can’t afford ANY MORE stupid off-field mistakes and recommends he voluntarily attend treatment or counseling? This is his 2nd DUI so he clearly has an alcohol issue.

That would show Blackmon that the team understands and is willing to support him, if he gets in line and realizes the gravity of the situation. This error is manageable if he genuinely understands he made a mistake and that he’s willing to do what it takes to make sure he doesn’t make anymore. His career is at a crossroads, he needs to decide if his potential NFL career is more important then throwing away his future with dumb mistakes that everyone makes from time to time.

Raqaiw – he may be getting his pain. OK has gotten pretty tough on DUI’s. Being 3 times the legal limit and the second DUI in a year may well net him a year in the slammer. Have had two aquaintances in the last few years that have ended up in the slammer for 6 months and a half way house for 6 months.

I like the guy and I hope he can straighten himself out Yes, the bad press is getting old, but if Blackmon can be a stud on the field all will be forgotteaan. Don’t forget that Mojo had a brush with the law just after being drafted and he worked out just fine.

I’m one of the few Rams fans still in existence and I find it ironic that everyone was concerned about Janoris Jenkins smoking marijuana and Floyd’s DUI but Blackmon “the safe pick” is the first one in trouble and putting innocent people in danger by being THREE TIMES over the legal limit.

Khan should have a strong GM to run the day to day football operations and allow that GM to handle situations such as this.
