The relationship between and elected official and his/her constituency is"loosely" analogous to the relationship between a corporation and it's stockholders.
So while your passion and outrage are commendable, you're mixing apples and oranges.

First, When you have guys flying around trying their hardest to make a team and make their dreams come true, people are going to collide and theres going to be contact. Pete nor anyone else is going to stop contact 100% of the time.

Second, this is something players voted for, so quit bitchin about goodell enforcing it.

And lastly, but most importantly, this is not in the same ballpark as bounty cases, or cap rules.

You folks blaming goodell for everything sound like morons. This is happening cuz the players wanted it.

Fines on hits are happening cuz ex players are raising hell.

Bounty cases are happening cuz that team was real blatent and asked to stopped for years.

Cap issues are happening cuz certain teams tried to get

None of this is really all that difficult. I believe the Commissioner has exactly as much power as the Owners and the Union agreed to vest in him via the CBA. He has the responsibility to decide these things because all parties agreed to give him that power.

If you all think he has too much then your beef is with those parties.

@Deb

I am so confused about this. Now I’m all for democracy and transparency, but when did the league become a governmental entity that had to answer to constituents? When did we start telling private (OK fine semi-private if you want because they have an an anti-trust exemption) corporations how to police their shop? Would you tell a major corporation that they need more transparency in how they discipline their people?

Let me stop you right there. You better believe I would. Let's hear it for Mother Jones (referring to the activist, not the magazine).

Stop treating Goodell like he’s your Congressman.

If I were treating him like he's my Congressman, I'd be directing my complaints to him and to the editorial pages, not to a blog. And I'd be working to have him removed from office. But I'm a football fan and he's an executive who abuses his power. So I'll just voice my opinion here whether you like it or not.

In fact, why don’t you start applying the same high level of scrutiny to your Congressman, you know…the person that actually represents you in our democratic system. The one that makes decisions that actually affect you.

My, my, aren't we being presumptuous? I am politically active. If you can't intellectually juggle both football and politics, then perhaps you should sign off here. I manage to simultaneously handle both of those and a variety of other topics and activities just fine, thank you.

@granadafan

Your comment doesn't make any sense. The NCAA investigated Pete Carroll and concluded that he had no involvement in the Reggie Bush scandal. I do, however, like that you call us U$C. It's awesome to be rich! Wouldn't want to be POORegon. Here is a excerpt from the 67 page report the NCAA filed on USC:

"Further, NCAA Bylaw 32.1.4 – Cooperative Principle, also addresses institutional responsibility to fully cooperate during infractions investigations, stating, in relevant part, "The cooperative principle imposes an affirmative obligation on each institution to assist the enforcement staff in developing full information, to determine whether a possible violation of NCAA legislation has occurred and the details thereof." The committee determined that the cooperation exhibited by the institution met its obligation under Bylaws 19.01.3.3 and 32.1.4."

Pete and USC cooperated. Pete was absolved of all guilt per the NCAA. So, who are you to say he was guilty or a cheater? Do you have inside knowledge? Did you perform a more thorough investigation compared to the NCAA's?

Thanks for pointing out that Goodell has sole discretion for determining whether an offense has occurred, punishing that offense, and revealing the nature and evidence of the alleged offense. Perhaps that would explain to some frequent PFT commenters why many of us feel he has too much power. Then again, they’re probably babbling “Don’t break the rules and you won’t get in trouble” as I type.

Makes me think of the John Mayer lyric about power and the media: “When they own the information, they can bend it all they want.” Same with the rules. If Goodell is the sole decider, he can twist the rules to suit what’s convenient for him and his bosses … and he frequently does just that.
-----------------------------
I am so confused about this. Now I'm all for democracy and transparency, but when did the league become a governmental entity that had to answer to constituents? When did we start telling private (OK fine semi-private if you want because they have an an anti-trust exemption) corporations how to police their shop? Would you tell a major corporation that they need more transparency in how they discipline their people? Obviously when laws are violated presents a different scenario, but should we be concerned with how corporations discipline their people for workplace violations? I would say emphatically - NO!.

When did fans decide that the league is no longer a private entity and confuse it with being a government? Does the league need its own federate appellate type judicial system now? Why, because the commissioner is focused on grabbing power (LMAO) and not the best interest of the league and the game? Is he gearing up to invade Poland? Is he trying to destroy the Saints because he hates Benson? Is he trying to destroy the Skins because George Preston Marshall was a racist?

It's pretty simple:

Injury Bounty Program=Detrimental to the Game
Evading a Colluded Salary Cap=An Unfair Advantage (detrimental to the game)
Full Contact Practice in violation of the CBA=An Honest Misinterpretation of the new CBA if it's the first offense

Stop treating Goodell like he's your Congressman. In fact, why don't you start applying the same high level of scrutiny to your Congressman, you know...the person that actually represents you in our democratic system. The one that makes decisions that actually affect you.

If you are concerned about the rules Goodell's bends and frames to serve his purpose, you will love what they are doing in government. I mean, if Government matters to you as much as football.
