Second-round pick Isaiah Pead signs with Rams

The Rams are inching closer to having their complete draft class under contract.

They got kicker Greg Zuerlein’s name on the dotted line and now the agent for second-round pick Isaiah Pead has announced that his client is under contract. Rick Smith sent out a tweet to that effect on Wednesday afternoon, followed closely by Pead’s announcement that he has his first job. Pead is the sixth Rams draft choice to sign with the team.

Pead was not with the Rams during OTAs because of the NFL rule prohibiting rookies from practicing with their teams until after the end of their college year. The University of Cincinnati wrapped up its semester in time for Pead to spend his first day with the team on Tuesday.

Now that he’s able to work, Pead will start trying to carve out a role for himself behind Steven Jackson. Pead’s explosiveness earned him pre-draft raves from Greg Cosell of NFL Films and helped convince the Rams that he has a shot to be Jackson’s replacement as the team’s feature back. For now, though, he’ll be a change-of-pace player and third-down back in St. Louis.
