Derrick Mason retiring as a Raven on Monday

Receiver Derrick Mason made known in January his intention to retire from the NFL. With the Ravens announcing on Sunday night a Monday press conference that will be attended by Mason, G.M. Ozzie Newsome, and coach John Harbaugh, it’s safe to assume that Mason will be retiring as a Raven.

A 15-year veteran, Mason held the single-season all-purpose yardage record from 2000 through 2011. Mason’s mark of 2,690 narrowly was edged by Darren Sproles of the Saints, who generated 2,696 yards in his first season with the Saints.

Mason accomplished his feat with only 896 yards from scrimmage; the rest of the yardage came via kickoff returns (1,132 yards) and punt returns (662).

Mason spent only six seasons in Baltimore, after eight years in Tennessee. Last season, he signed with the Jets, was traded to the Texans, and eventually was cut.

He finishes his career with 943 receptions for 12,064 yards and 66 touchdowns.
