really2011, I do understand the concept of salary cap, my team has had enough failed efforts during the vinny cerrato years for me to understand them quite well.

my point is, Drew is this unquestioned leader of the team, I feel that with some players it’s ok to take extra time, but not with a qb of Brees’ caliber.

Peyton Manning, deal would be done. Brady, done. Rodgers, done.

it’s disrespectful to Brees, he’s been vexed about not having a deal since before last year, this isn’t new.

spankygreen, I would pay that man as much as he want’s, with as many years as he need to feel comfortable, because he deserves to be paid like Brady, like Manning, ect.

The Saints have leverage because they got bounced early the last few years plus Drew’s numbers are lower on grass. Brees has leverage because the organization is riddled with scandal and controversy and he’s largely considered a nice young man who can act as the responsible babysitter.
Still, if I were #9, I’d want out of that mess. Trade to Houston maybe?

The Saints have put three (3) contracts before Brees that will make him the highest paid QB in the league.

As much as I appreciate all that Brees has done for the Saints and New Orleans, this is starting to piss me off to the heights of pisstivity!!

If the Saints were smart they should have picked up Tebow. That would have put pressure on Brees to sign a deal bc while there is no comparison in skill level Tebow would draw a fan base and possibly help to win games. He is also a good organization person that could have helped them turn page and change the headlines from Bountygate. And, I think he is an upgrade from their current backup QB.

Problem with that is the Saints could sign Brees for $50 Million a year and it wouldn’t cost team ownership an extra dime. The NFL has a salary cap system, so all it would mean is that the Saints would have less money to sign other players.

Now someone is going to use that as a means to bash Brees for insisting that be be paid less than he’s worth, which is ridiculous. It’s been demonstrated over and over again that teams paying premium dollars to premium quarterbacks can and do win in the NFL.

Based on everything I’ve read what Brees is asking for is completely reasonable, a deal that’s a bit less than what Manning and Brady are getting.

I have no idea why the Saints are stepping on the toes of the greatest and most beloved player in franchise history. Bottom line – just pay Brees.

LOL!!!! My intent is not to insult all Skins Fans but there is this tool that the NFL uses called Salary Cap. While your team has gotten better I am not sure that you would be in a place to understand the concept. When the team has already offered a deal to make him the highest padi player I would imagine that the negotiations should move forward with caution.

Not signing him by 7/16 would be stupid on both parts but stupid today is signing a crippling deal for the franchise (see Tom Condon’s other client and their Indy deal). Or just take a look at Haynesworth, a washed up Deion Sanders, etc.
