Those inclined to think of Brian Banks’ story in Hollywood terms will certainly appreciate the fact that a roster spot opened in Kansas City the day after Banks worked for the Chiefs.

Tight end Martin Rucker will have season-ending surgery on his right knee, landing him on injured reserve and freeing up space on the Chiefs’ 90-man roster. Banks, the former USC linebacking recruit whose life and football career were short-circuited by conviction on rape charges that turned out to be manufactured, was in Kansas City Tuesday for a workout that that coach Romeo Crennel called “decent.”

“It went well considering he hasn’t been playing football, but you can tell he has been working out,” Crennel said in a post-practice press conference. “The football drills, he still remembers those things. I think the more workouts that he can have with different teams, the more it will come back to him. It was a decent workout.”

Crennel referred questions about whether or not the Chiefs would sign Banks to General Manager Scott Pioli, saying that he just coaches the guys that Pioli gives to him. We will have to wait and see if Banks was decent enough to land a contract or if his quest for an NFL job will continue. Banks is at Seahawks minicamp Wednesday and Thursday.
