Mike Wallace aint no team player. If he wanted to be a steeler he would take the offer and work on his contract later in the season. Second how many players renegotiated their contracts and got cut of the team just to reach the cap to sign him but does he stop to think about that NO HE DOESN'T. I say screw mike wallace get farrior back aaron smith ill even say try to bring HINES WARD BACK FROM RETIREMENT. STEELERS want players that have love for the team not for themselves.

On second thought I have come to see the error in my ways. My logic (constantly flawed) has taken a turn for the worse as you can see by my previous post. After a healthy sit down with my therapist and 5+ hours of listening to old Myron Cope recordings I know see the light. Best of luck to the Steelers the rest of the offseason. Good health to all of Pittsburgh and may Baltimore burn in black and gold flames. That will be all.

Well, Hood and Heyward were #1 picks, I'd hardly call that marginal. Hood made a huge improvement in the run defense after he made the starting line-up last year after Aaron Smith was injured. Both look to be improved this year, and both actually look pretty good for being what the Steelers need out of their 3-4 linemen. Hood looks to be VERY improved, he is in magnificent shape this year.

The o-line should also indeed be very improved. Every team depends on their o-line lol.

Restructuring doesn't mean they borrowed against future years, it meant an increase in the amount of signing bonus money for those contracts. I don't think it changes the future year's cap space very much.

Hampton has been to three pro bowls I believe, pro bowl nose tackles are never going to be cheap. He is likely to be put on the PUP list which means he will miss the just first six weeks. he is likely to be healthy after that. He (and players like Larry Foote) is/are also likely to be cut next year, which will save them on cap space.

I dunno man, I think they will be better this year than last. Certainly younger, which is good thing. They look upgraded in every position for the players they lost from last year.

@clashpoint:

steelers have a lot of holes. They couldn't pay to fix them. They signed rookies to 3 yr contracts, now it's a problem. Now they have to rely on rookies and marginal draft picks(like Hood and Hayward, for example), not to mention they had to cut a lot of veteran leadership and have no proven running back. Offensive line is still a joke. They got away with it before with Pouncey and had a great draft, but now they're depending on it too much. They overpaid many players. Casey Hampton for one. Lucky if he plays this yr. Colbert should have seen this coming. It's only gonna get worse, cap is not going up that much in the next couple of yrs and the steelers , by all this restructuring , have already borrowed heavily against it. Get ready for a bridge yr.

Y'know, I keep seeing posts in the Steeler articles about how the Steelers mismanage their cap, and I just don't see that at all.

I don't remember any super bad contracts they got stuck with in recent times. The only reallyyy bad contracts I can remember are the one for Limas Sweed, who single-handedly is the reason why Brown and Sanders got 3 year contracts instead of four, and maybe Kemoeatu. No team gets their draft perfect every year after all, but the Steelers definitely do better than almost everyone else.

Their players are willing to renegotiate their contracts rather then risk getting cut - which says a lot about how players embrace their team concept, which includes cap management. The Steelers would rather let a player go than over pay them, yet they still keep a very high talent level on hand all the time.

They don't overpay, but since they are up against the cap line all the time, they don't underpay either. This year, they have enough on hand to pay all their rookies and still sign back all the veterans they needed/wanted. Yeah, it took some contract restructuring by their current players. SO!?! That's a good thing, that their players are so willing to do it. It bodes well for both the team and their cap.

So, next time you want to claim the Steeler mismanage their cap - bring some reasoning, stats and examples, ok? I for one would like to see them.

Kudos to the Steelers for not blinking on the Mike Wallace situation, and for that matter to the Ravens for doing the same with Ray Rice.

As a Bengal fan, I'd rather be facing Mike Wallace twice a year than Antonio Brown; Brown is going to be a stud IMO for a lot of years. I'd like to see them get Wallace signed, but then somehow screw-up with Brown next year.

But being the Steelers, they'll probably get both guys done somehow.

The problem is, what the Steelers think Wallace deserves, and what HE thinks he deserves are very different.

About bengal561 saying Wallace is a top 5 receiver? No way…

Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, AJ Green, Roddy White are 5 guys I would take over Wallace.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Not to mention Greg Jennings, Hakeem Nicks or Victor Cruz

The Steelers have always been great at making the team about the team, not a single player. Anyone at any position can go at any time and the Steelers will compensate. We'd be better with him, but we're still a Super Bowl contender without him.

@bgsusteelers

Why are you trying to force Mike into a mold that he's not. Yes if he could perfect his route running on the intermediate routes then he would be a complete receiver. I would love to see him be more reliable on third down. The fact that he isn't is an area where he can improve. But why are you letting the perfect take away from the very good? In today's NFL - I'll explain since you put it in quotes - where defensive game plans are more and more designed to take away the opposing teams greatest weapon, the ability of Mike to demand double coverage with his speed is what opens up some of the holes for Brown, Miller, and co.

I'll reiterate my first point. He's not a top tier guy like Fitz, Megatron, White or some of those other guys. But I believe you're marginalizing what he does do well (VERY well) because you want him to be something he's not. Let Mike do his thing, and allow other guys like AB, Miller, Sanders, Cotchery, and whoever else to do there's as a result of it. Just don't pay him elite money to do it.

Typical steeler revisionist thinking. 'We don't need him', one trick pony', he's not that good anyway'. See what happens when you have to replace a guy that's good for 1200 yrds when he holds out till wk 10. We'll see how good ABrown is when he has to be THE GUY. Doesn't deserve top 5 $, but that's just his negotiating pt. His agent could argue he deserves top 10 $. Not that the steelers could pay him even that, due to contract and cap mismgt. This guy still has a lot of upside. His route running, while still not great, has vastly improved since he came into the league, at least according to Belichick. You'll miss him when he's gone. Course you can just plug in that 6th round pick. What's wrong with counting on 5 rookie starters?

Typical steeler revisionist thinking. ‘We don’t need him’, one trick pony’, he’s not that good anyway’. See what happens when you have to replace a guy that’s good for 1200 yrds when he holds out till wk 10. We’ll see how good ABrown is when he has to be THE GUY. Doesn’t deserve top 5 $, but that’s just his negotiating pt. His agent could argue he deserves top 10 $. Not that the steelers could pay him even that, due to contract and cap mismgt.
Napoleon:

While being able to outrun people is important in "today's NFL," you know what is more important? Being able to run an 8 yard dig in press coverage to convert 3rd and 7. Wallace is just like Randy Moss in the sense that from day one neither player evolved their skill set. Moss has been the same player since his rookie year, as has Wallace. Granted, Moss was an absolute beast and had the size to dominate strictly off of going deep and jumping over people. Wallace ain't no Randy Moss either. Same speed as Moss, but he doesn't have near the size Moss had to be dominant. Wallace HAS to beat his man to make a big play. Moss could be step for step with a defender and still make the catch. Regardless, my point is that both guys seem to have been content with doing that one thing very very well and nothing else. If you want to look at someone who has evolved, look at a Hines Ward or Chad Johnson during their day. Neither guy had top end speed or size or leaping ability, so they were forced to develop in other ways.

Wallace isn't a top 5 wide receiver by any strecth of the imagination.

He's a one-demensional wide reciever and his one demension is his speed. So...what we did was draft Tony Clemons in the 6th round who is just as fast as Wallace but taller!

That's how we handle primadonna wide receivers!!!

We know how to find wide receivers. That's just a knack that we have. So Wallace is at the wrong position to be demanding anything.

I want Wallace to hold out ALL OF CAMP! That way, Clemons can get all his reps and be ready for the beggining of the season..we won't miss a beat.

Mike should give Colbert the bird. The reason they can't pay him is because they can't AFFORD to pay him. They were too busy restructuring contracts and handcuffing their entire future on an aging safety, aging linebackers, a secondary led by Ike Taylor (hah!). This team is sinking, fast, abandon ship Pittsburgh. When they post a 9-7 record and place third in the AFCN, the bandwagon fans will be jumping off all those bridges over there.

Cheers!

I'd take his teammate Brown over Wallace. Brown runs better routes, returns punts better than Wallace returns kick-offs (which, he doesn't) and has a better attitude. Brown wasn't named team MVP last year for nothing.

Mike Wallace, are you listening? Pay attention:

Good teams have enough good players that they have to spread the money around - and your teammates do EXACTLY that. Any pay raise you get comes from your teammates restructuring their contracts! Don't be greedy with your teammates' money!

The Steelers are not going to cheat you, but they are also not going to break their salary cap for you either. You want to stay with a good team, re-sign with the Steelers and be reasonable.

You want big money? Go play on a crappy team next year, one which has a low enough talent level they can give all their cash to you alone.

Maybe the reason why he hasn’t been given a new
deal yet is because he hasn’t been a PR problem.

If he was saying or doing stupid things then the team
would give him more money in an effort to keep him
in line. I don’t recall (in the past) Roethlisberger, Harrison,
Ward, or Mendenhall having to wait for their money. Why?
Because they start acting up and the team tries to solve the
problem by throwing money at these guys instead
of properly punishing them when they mess up.

Then they wonder why there are so many divas on the team…
-------------------------------
Mendenhall is still on his rookie deal. While Harrison and Big Ben may have been called a few things, Divas has never been one of them. Same can be said for Ward. If anything if you want to see how the Steelers deal with divas you need to look at Santonio Holmes....

Trolling is one thing, but when you're this far off base its just silly.

I would caution folks who are saying that all Mike Wallace can do is out run people - in today's NFL that is a pretty important skill to have at the WR position. He can take the top off the defense on fly routes, but has also shown elusiveness in the open field on reverses, bubble screens and slants.

With that being said, Wallace is not an elite receiver. In my opinion he falls into the second tier of receivers that begins after the drop off behind Fitz, Calvin Johnson, Roddy White, and Andre Johnson. He's on par (in my opinion) with Greg Jennings, Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, AJ Green (I shudder when I put this name here because as a Steeler fan I'm not looking forward to when he makes the jump into the top tier VERY soon) and Wes Welker. 5 years, mid $40mm sounds right. Any less great, any more wish him the best of luck in FA next year.

His hands are above average, his route running is average, he still needs a lot of work catching when a defender is all over him, etc etc. Now I don't expect he will ever be great at everything, but after three years he is still the same WR he was the day they drafted him.
