Lions have a plan for monitoring Nick Fairley until training camp

For NFL players who are inclined to find trouble off the field, late June and early July — after minicamp and before training camp — is a prime time for it. Which means that right now is one of the prime times for NFL teams to worry about what their players are up to.

In the case of the Lions and their 2011 first-round draft pick, defensive tackle Nick Fairley, that means making plans to keep tabs on a troubled player. Anwar S. Richardson of MLive.com reports that Lions coach Jim Schwartz said the team plans to monitor Fairley before training camp begins next month.

Schwartz didn’t get into any of the specifics of those plans, but the Lions obviously want to ensure that Fairley — who was arrested once for marijuana possession and once for drunk driving this offseason — doesn’t get his third arrest of the year.

“He has a plan for what’s going to go on in the month off, as do the rest of our players,” Schwartz said. “They get ready for training camp. There’s still workouts. There’s a lot of different things. I don’t want to be particular with him, but he has a plan.”

Ideally, the Lions would be able to count on Fairley to conduct himself the right way without the team keeping tabs on him. And the reality is that if a player is intent on driving drunk, possessing illegal drugs or doing anything else that can land him in legal trouble, there’s only so much a team can do to stop him. But the Lions, who still believe Fairley can be a great player on their defensive line, are going to do what they can to keep him in line.

  1. For sure, the players can take care of themselves.

There’s no need for a heavy hand, like Goddell’s.

  2. I wonder if the babysitters for these grown men make the same as babysitters for children?

  3. If you really want him to stay out of trouble, have one of the well respected players that keeps his nose clean stick with him until training camp, It can’t hurt.

  4. Good luck with this one. Grown man and you have “baby sit” him like a 10 yr old so he doesn’t do anything stupid.
And eventhough we got Brandon Marshall , at least he doesn’t go drinking and driving being a danger to everyone else like Suh and Fairley.

  5. The Bengals are kicking themselves for passing on someone who fits their organization perfectly.

  6. He is showing all of the signs of having a substance abuse issue. Get him into an aggressive program now and he’ll be fine. Let this go and we’ll watch him self destruct, that is all.

  7. As an entrepreneur, it may be a good idea to open a Daycare for NFL and NBA players

  8. For the alcohol, put a SCRAM bracelet on him, it measures if you’ve had any alcohol through your skin. For the marijuana, put… wait… its weed who gives a s@#t. Legalize it.

  9. 1. This was not a smart pick.
    2. Fairley has proven why this wasn’t a smart pick
    3. And yet unlike most bad picks this one still has a chance of paying off cause the kid is just really really good.

I put the odds at about 15% this whole thing works out well. If it does though…..my Lions will be scary good.

  10. He shouldnt be allowed to leave the metro detroit area. He shouldnt want to he should stay local and work out. Hell even cliff avril stayed local since last season and has been working out and he is a HOLDOUT. Obviously the future of our team reallys on fairley being a productive human off the field not just a productive player on the field. Go Leos

  11. If I had Fairleys money, I’d stay my butt at home, with a bunch of random hoes coming in and out, in my house connected to a lake, with five jet skis…..the GOOD life!

  12. Amazing, people bitch about Goodell yet they make excuses to babysit a full grown assclown like Nick (Baby Huey) Fairley. When the hell is everyone going to grow up, these guys are full grown men, it’s a wonder they can wipe themselves after using the bathroom!

  13. Give him the Josh Hamilton treatment, his own personal manager who follows him around.

  14. It saddens me that this fool makes more in three years than my parents, friends and myself make in our lifetime. These idiots don’t even know how lucky they are that they try to ruin it by getting high and drink and driving. Nick is a grown ass man and he needs a babysitter. What a joke, enjoy your millions Nick!

  15. I doubt very seriously if we’ll have to worry about Fairley driving habits once he goes before the judge for those two DUW”s as well as that speeding charge. I can see him hiring a car service for a long time. He better hope that that judge he faces is an Auburn Alum? If that judge is a Bama Alum he may not play in this upcoming season at all

  16. Yeah, I feel like these guys should all bunk up with an established vet for their first year. I’d stick Suh and Fairley with KVB from the day they sign through the next offseason.

You won’t be such a big mouth when Suh and Fairley smack the living cowardice right out of Cutler.

I bet. You’d be one the the group of players who are bankrupt five years after retirement.

  19. Guys like Fairley are products of failed parenting and lacking zero sense of responsibility. He’s been coddled by his schools and never had to lift a finger to work hard in the classroom in high school or at Auburn (SEC, of course) where tutors did the work for him and all he had to do was play ball. Get in trouble? Coach will cover for you.

Last I knew, Brandon marshall and nick fairley are even on DUI arrests. Check facts before making stupid comments.

    ______________________________

Of course, Brandon Marshall also has a clinically-diagnosed mental illness known as Borderline Personality Disorder, which is characterized by mood swings, unstable self image, troubled relationships, fears of abandonment, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and other erratic and unstable behavior.

Last I knew, the need to “get crunk” wit yer homeboys and drive drunk at 100 mph to elude cops (and/or get busted for pot and smile in the mugshot) has not been recognized by the American Psychiatric Association or the DSM-IV as a clinical, verifiable medical condition.

Oh, 13 months into his NFL career, Nick Fairley has one sack and two arrests.

By time Marshall first had any off-field troubles, he’d already been in the league and put together MULTIPLE consecutive seasons with 100+ catches and 1100+ yds receiving.

Check context before making stupid comments.

  21. How would you be bankrupt, you can buy a reasonable home and 5 jet skis after like week 6 of your salary check in one season lol, its the Ferraris and crazy stuff people buy, I’d drive a Honda Accord and have great gas mileage lol
