I’m glad I’m not the first person here to mention the deaths and violence associated with standing room seating in European Soccer, before they all switched over to “all-seater” stadiums. Such a concept is a luxury in North American sports that the Jerry Jones’s and Dan Snyder’s of the world do not yet appreciate.

That’s a joke, right? Must be, because you’re talking about one of the top two grossing teams in the league. That would never happen.

As a matter of fact, in the DC/Virginia area, the sales of NFL Sunday Ticket are 30% lower than in any other area of the United States, because everybody here is watching the team they want to see, on Fox.

Ok, I made that last part up, but it sounded good, right?

Yo, Gordy!

Those television contracts that feed this entire enterprise will disappear if NFL games begin looking like MLB games. Vast stretches of empty seats are one thing but 50 yard line/home plate vacancies SCREAM “inconsequential/insignificant/trivial” and the networks will NOT dedicate dozens of cameras and staff and certainly NOT pay billions to show games that look and feel like the USFL did.
Like it or not there are fans who matter and fans who matter a little more. Those are the butts in the seats who create the incredible Sunday excitement that television then tries to present in living rooms and sports bars. The best sign of any franchise’s vitality is its season ticket waiting list. Wouldn’t you agree?

while this guy may have spoke a little boldly, the fact is that the Redskins have not had a problem selling out games, even at their worst. Even with Snyder suing fans and half the stadium wearing bags over their heads, the Redskins have sold out games. Does that make them the “best fan base on the planet”? That would be a very contentious argument. All this proves unquestionably, is that Washington has one of the richest sports markets in the country as well as the most cash-saturated and least recession-damaged fan base. Which is why, despite being just God-Awful since 1992, the Redskins remain the second most profitable franchise in the country and remain in the top five franchises in jersey sales every year.

This is an awful idea. Much of the fan violence involved in European soccer in the 80′s and 90′s came as a result of standing room sections.

Within a few years I would expect someone to be seriously injured, if not killed in a standing room area.

WOW. If I lived in the DC area, I would definitely pay $300 for a season of standing room only tickets to see the Redskins in their home stadium. It has been a dream of mine to see them in their home stadium. I have been a fan since 1982 and have seen them five times in Dallas (I live in East Texas).

The seats were removed because they were awful! Folks on the season ticket waiting list were turning down offers to spend $2,000+ per seat for a bad view so converting them to SRO at $290 per makes them attractive. It’s a supply and demand problem and we’ll see if the Redskins hit the sweet spot on the price.

The seats are easily removed and put back in. That’s the point. You don’t think they can put those seats back in in a week?

The biggest benefit to a “standing room” ticket is they will have the easiest time running for the parking lot after another beatdown

Sounds like a great plan … until the Fire Marshal visits the stadium and shuts it down due to safety concerns.

Danny, what other benefits come with the tickets that come without the seat? Perhaps you can charge folks $5 bucks a game for leaving their cars in the “party parking lot” on the shoulder of Interstate 495?
