Wes Welker and friends get “tackled” by security officials in Aspen

Wes Welker AP

As one set of player suspensions is still being hammered out by the league office, another player came close to getting himself in line for a suspension of his own on Friday night.

The New York Post reports that Patriots receiver Wes Welker and six friends, while apparently partying in advance of Welker’s wedding, tried to crash a party held in connection with the Aspen Food & Wine Classic.  Security officials “tackled” the members of the group, but they thereafter continued to demand to be let in to the event.

The men (who fairly could be called the “seven dwarves,” if they all were Welker’s size) didn’t end up singing “Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, it’s off to jail we go.”  Police reportedly threatened to arrest Welker and his pre-nuptial posse, and they eventually calmed down and left the premises.

Per the Post, Aspen police records indicate that a “lecture and release” (that’s what I do to every fish I catch) was administered at the location, but it doesn’t specify that Welker and his group were on the receiving end of it.

He should have caught it, but a good throw from Brady goes for six…

I wonder if a taller receiver with a darker complextion and maybe a few tats that was partying with “his pre-nuptial posse” would have been lectured and released?

    Lecture and release?
… so pretty much every day in Patriots camp with Belichick then

Being lectured by police while on a batchelor party weekend with his buddies isn’t so bad.

  7. theverifiedtruth says: Jun 19, 2012 9:06 AM

I’m sure if it was 7 black players crashing that party the “lecture and release” would have been “arrest and charge”.

  8. cleverbob says: Jun 19, 2012 9:28 AM

Tom Brady would have been welcomed in with open arms. Being his favorite receiver, not good enough…

Why are you assuming Welkers 6 friends are white guys.

  13. tombrookshire says: Jun 19, 2012 9:51 AM

Welker undoubtedly asked, “Do you know who I am?” At the answer, the police immediately removed the handcuffs, apologized, requested an autograph and left the building. Typical reaction to the mention of the NFL, the world’s most powerful corporation.

Stop running from the racial conversation. You are right, we have no idea what would’ve happened but, in your honest OPINION, do you really think it would’ve ended the same way if Welker and his friends were Black? Why? It’s fact, Blacks don’t get the same respect from police or just society as a whole as White people. Would Trayvon Martin be dead if he was white? you are being a naive fool if you think the situation would’ve been the same if Welker was Black. I believe there definitely would’ve been an arrest if Welker was Black.

C’mon guy, playing the race card? How do you know 1, 2 or more of Welker’s friends weren’t black? A majority of the players Welker plays with on the Patriots are black, so how can you speak about race issues before knowing the full truth? You are a part of the reason that people of different race have a hard time getting along. Grow up, not everything is about color.

Not one to play the race card, but, it’s Aspen, Colorado. Guys, don’t be naïve…arrested and charged was much more a likely outcome.

It’s comments like this that continue racial bias in this country. Comments made like this, with no merit, are just like crying wolf.

As someone that skiis in Aspen on a regular basis, they are 1) extremely tolerant of stupid behavior (I only got a stern warning when I hit one of the officers with a snowball) 2) they are used to high profile/wealthy individuals of ALL races there 3) about as open minded (read: anti racist) as any place I’ve been too.

Besides, the town is like 4 square miles….their police force isn’t big enough to arrest 7 people, let alone their jail holding them :)

Yes, because *every* small town in america handles things the same way as an urban city (rolls eyes). Especially small towns that routinely have guests like Michael Jordan, Micheal Eisner, and um, oh every single athlete that participates in the Espn X games.

Every X Games athlete? Yes, the Winter X Games, that shining beacon of racial diversity. Please, man.

Obviously, not every cop nor every municipality is going to handle to these things exactly the same way, but it’s not a matter of opinion that in general, young black guys aren’t going to get the same benefit of the doubt that young white guys are. I’ve seen it, you’ve seen it, we’ve all seen it. It exists. Maybe there were black guys in the group. I’d love to find out more. But all things being equal, these things are never equal.

Hey ochenta, google Steve McNair and how easy he got off from drunk driving one of his many times because the cop drove him home. Leniency with sports figures is more likely to be a result of star worship than race.

Where was Sno White while the dwarfs were getting in this mischief? Out getting the stickum for Welker’s hands?

Geesh – big deal – 7 guys on a bachelor party goof try to crash a party.

Aspen must really have ritzy parties if they have their own security force at events like that?

Years ago – Loved skiing in Aspen – and was there once during a black ski week – when the town welcomed many African Americans – and I don’t recall any problems.

    Course – I B white. :)

  33. ravenat0r says: Jun 19, 2012 11:49 AM

Doesnt matter we will still miss field goals to go to overtime in big games. We will still choke under the immense amount of pressure (that is living up to the Steelers standards in the AFC North). We will always be a second tier team. We will represent our city the way the people represent our city. Average and lame. God have mercy on Baltimore. Our run is over.

You continue to YET again miss the point. You know NOTHING about Aspen. Yet you want to dismiss everything, and generalize.

The point about the athletes was not x games athletes are diverse (and actually, there are quite a few Asians in that group, Ryo Aono and Yuka Fujimori come to mind without even looking up any), it was that Aspen as a town, is used to famous people, athletes, rich people, poor people, and that sometimes, someone that looks like a nobody is really a somebody.

In that town, they don’t racially profile people. Yet you, who outside of this article probably never heard of Aspen, want to say “if they had been black, all things being equal they’d have gotten arrested, because of stuff that happened to Ryan Moats in Dallas”.

Yes, racial profiling does exist. Yes, I’ve seen it. But I’m not stupid enough to make blanket statements generalizing one small town in western America, to a huge urban city in America’s South.

The town is pretty much a tourist town, where tourism provides a large part of their income. Which is why they treat everyone with respect, and equality. Because out there, you mistreat someone, and they turn out to be the CEO of blockbuster, and the next thing you know, a billionaire is spending money on your competitor’s business/city/town/property for sale, and not yours.

Yo, yo SCLA hood hommies, why your boy Drake dissed Chris in some rich whiteass bar ? Why Chris can’t fight like a man with his fists and has to throw beer bottles ? Now Tony Parker got major eye injury ! He’s black. I don’t come in your trashpile and throw bottles and rocks. Half the police force of NYC is black, Hispanic or Asian. They arrest lots of whites every day. They’re called Italian mobsters. Deal with it. Grow up and call Obmombo for $$, he just threw a ton to the redmen and gave free passes to all the illegal mexicans. Have a party for it, but stay out of Aspen. My hood.

They have been given this freedom to mess up without any consequences their whole lives because as we all know good athletes always get better treatment starting in high school, through college and then when they get to the NFL they come to expect special treatment especially when they act out like the spoiled rotten children that they are. Shame on you and shame on the NFL and the other major sports franchises for standing by and doing nothing. There are a lot of young children watching every move these guys and gals make and if there are no consequences for bad behavior what better can we expect from them. The athletes today have saddened me with their behavior , not all, but a lot, and it might have always been like this but with everyone having a camera ready it is easier to document. So behave like a man or lady and have some respect for yourself. Something that my dad taught me and my 8 brothers and the USMC instilled in me even more. Learn some RESPECT Mr. Welker!
