Patriots in contact with Sammy Morris

Sammy Morris Pic

Grizzled veteran running back Sammy Morris opened last season as a street free agent after being released at the Patriots’ final cuts. He did catch on with the Cowboys in December, rushing 28 times for 98 yards in three appearances.

Morris’ contract expired in Dallas, and he’s a street free agent again. According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, though, Morris might have something in the works.

Howe reported on Twitter Thursday that Morris has spoken to the Patriots “about potentially returning” to New England for the 2012 season. Per Howe, “there’s reciprocal interest.”

The Patriots’ backfield would appear to be fairly deep at first glance. They have young backs Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen deserving of increased workloads, with Danny Woodhead as the third-down back and ex-Colt Joseph Addai in reserve. Undrafted rookie Brandon Bolden rounds out the unit.

Perhaps the Pats will keep Morris’ number on speed dial into August. While Morris is now 35 years old, he possesses valuable versatility and knows new coordinator Josh McDaniels’ offense.
