The 49ers stay in Youngstown during the season? That’s crazy, if any of don’t know Youngstown, OH…I don’t even know how to put it. It’s a small town on the edge of Appalachia. IN fact I think it’s technically considered part of Appalachia. It was a booming town 100 years ago. Population peaked at 170,000 in 1930, it has declined ever since and now sits at under 70,000. It was a steel and coal driven economy. But the one thing they have in that area of Ohio, are a football field everywhere you look. It’s also odd to note that the 49ers CEO lives in Youngstown. Former 49ers owner Ed DeBartolo, Jr. was born and raised in Youngstown. He worked for his father early on whose company was building the early shopping malls. The one in my town still stands, and is the only shopping mall in town. It was built around 1974 or so. He’s an interesting figure, he bought the 49ers in 1977 at the age of 31. Turned it into the dynasty of the 80′s and 90′s before leaving the game in after the 1999 season at the age of 54. Some owners were past 54 when they bought their first team, and this guy had 5 rings in 23 years and retired at 54.

Yeah, Vegas Guy, that is exactly the problem. Lewis is a great coach and the players love him, and play hard for him. But it's always been hard to draw good players to the team because of facilities and amenities and such. Lewis has finally got Brown to budge on some of this stuff. And I think that is part of why he is has not signed a deal yet. He knows to compete with the rest of the league you have to be on at least an equal footing. I don't get it, Mike Brown's father Paul who was owner/GM through 1990, was always ahead of other teams. Always ahead of the curve. Lewis is the best negotiator with Brown for us fans we could ever hope for. What other coach of his level is willing to waste his career being under-rated and under-appreciated, just to spend 10+ years trying to convince an owner/GM with the worst winning % in all of sports to change his ways. But he's done a great job and brought Brown a long way. Brown has positive attributes of his own. He built the two AFC Champion rosters of 81 and 88. And his stamp was all over the last 2 drafts. So hopefully Lewis can continue to bring him along and the sign him for another 4-5 years.

"Bengals joining the iPad revolution"

I may never get over that...

mwindle1973 is right. Marvin has given his players Monday off for as long as I can remember. And I've never thought the problem was that they were soft on the player.. I always think the players just don't want to play there (because perks are better EVERYWHERE)

Anyway... sorry to intrude Ravens fans

Seems like little brother Jim is ahead of John on this one….Jim instituted Mondays off–win or lose–last year, breaking with most of the NFL.

I agree with you on this...but it's funny...Marvin Lewis has done this for many years in Cincy and the media always points to that as one of the reasons they have problems. They say he's soft on the players. The players don't say he's soft. In fact TJ Houshmandzeh still makes statements about how much Lewis demands of his players. And he hasn't played with the team for 4 years.
