Teenage girl arrested for beating former 49ers linebacker Ed Beard

A fifth teenager has been arrested in connection with a mob attack last year of 72-year-old former 49ers linebacker Ed Beard.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that the 16-year-old girl, whose name has not been released, was charged with malicious wounding and malicious wounding by mob in connection with the October 23 attack on Beard. Four boys have already been charged, including one 16-year-old who confessed last month and said the beating was part of a gang initiation.

Beard laughed when told by the Virginian-Pilot that a girl was charged.

“Former NFL linebacker beaten up by a girl,” Beard said he expected headlines to read.

But there was nothing funny about the beating, which began when Beard came upon a group of teenagers beating up another boy. Beard attempted to jump in to help the boy, and that’s when the teenagers attacked him. Beard sustained cuts and bruises and a black eye and needed stitches.

The girl who was arrested is being charged as a juvenile, and the attorney for the boy who confessed said he also hopes his client will be sentenced as a juvenile. But Beard said he thinks the teenagers who attacked him “should know what the big jail is all about.”

72 years you and still no hesitation to fight a gang by himself to help another. Kids like those in that gang make me feel like I was born and raised on a different planet.

I’m too young to have watched this man, but he’s sounds totally awesome.

Did the right thing and laughed about its result. If only he would have been in his previous form.

    HULK SMASH!

    Um… wow

  4. unlimitedcriticism says: Jun 21, 2012 4:30 PM

Maybe we can contract out the Saints to do some “Pay for Performance” on those kids.

  5. bigjdve says: Jun 21, 2012 4:40 PM

They should be tried as adults. If they are old enough to join a gang, they are old enough to be judged like a gang member.

I say if you want to put yourself in man’s shoes, than you need to be treated like a man.

What a shame…kids these days. Lock them up and let them get jumped a few times to see how it feels…

  8. mute617 says: Jun 21, 2012 4:44 PM

They should be tried as adults. Vicious crimes like this should not be taken lightly.

No respect, kids nowadays. Thank the lord Ed
    wasn’t hurt worst.

  10. bjtmeyer says: Jun 21, 2012 4:45 PM

Sentence them as adults! They knew what they were doing.

  11. rc33 says: Jun 21, 2012 4:45 PM

The worst part of this story by far is that he was just trying to help.
I feel terrible saying it but nowadays Rule 1 would appear to be: keep your head down and just keep walking. Why would Ed Beard want to do the Good Samaritan thing ever again?

And is anyone else tired of “protecting the identity” of vicious, substandard humanoids just because they’re 16 years old?

  12. larryboodry says: Jun 21, 2012 4:48 PM

I agree with Mr. Beard…Charge ‘em as adults.

  13. gbrown23 says: Jun 21, 2012 4:48 PM

Damn I’m not going to lie I laughed a little bit when I read the headline. But this is effed up. Lock all those little bastards up.

  14. southpaw79 says: Jun 21, 2012 4:49 PM

As punishment, the girl should be sent to Big Ben’s house for “counseling” . She is only 16? Alright we can hold off sending her to Big Ben until her 18th birthday.

On a side note, how funny would it be to watch a bunch of 16 year olds try to jump Patrick Willis?

  15. thegreatgabbert says: Jun 21, 2012 4:51 PM

    Do not attack The Beard.

  16. stlsteelerfan says: Jun 21, 2012 4:51 PM

I never understand the gang mentality of showing how “tough” you are by ganging up on one person. How does a 4-1 or 5-1 fight show you’re tough?? You’re only showing that you’re a wuss who can’t fight for yourself.

  17. sportsmeccabi says: Jun 21, 2012 4:52 PM

My generation is trying really hard to become the most hated one, isn’t it?

  18. sonoco says: Jun 21, 2012 4:56 PM

Gotta give the old guy credit. 72 years old and still leaping into the fray . . . sounds like a linebacker.

  19. geeeeemen says: Jun 21, 2012 5:17 PM

He should have flashed the 8 finger sign of the Van Buren Boys

  20. handsofsweed says: Jun 21, 2012 5:27 PM

    Southpaw:

So what you’re saying is that you think the girl shouldn’t be punished at all. Or that she should blatantly lie about being punished.

    Which is it?

  21. discosucs2005 says: Jun 21, 2012 5:32 PM

Can we just talk about how awesome his name is?

  22. tropboi11 says: Jun 21, 2012 5:50 PM

If you’re old enough to join a gang you damn sure old enough to be locked up like a gang member. But even in Juve they would get beat up once everyone found out what they did to get sent there. And you never F with an older guy, you have no idea what he has been thru in those 72 years.

  23. mogogo1 says: Jun 21, 2012 6:46 PM

Not nearly as clever, but my vote for headline would be “Great man attacked by sub-humans.”

Keep making your families proud, losers. And when some other loser eventually takes you out, I just hope no innocent bystanders get hurt.

  24. frankiemontana says: Jun 21, 2012 6:58 PM

Great job by Mr. Beard at 72 he still playing old school football,

  25. josiewales69 says: Jun 21, 2012 8:31 PM

“Former NFL linebacker beaten up by a girl,” Beard said he expected headlines to read.

And of course MDS obliges with the title to this story…good job once again.

  27. arbruins says: Jun 21, 2012 10:46 PM

I am surprised no one picked up on the fact that the girl was a 16 year old 5th grader…how dumb do you have to be to get initiated into a gang? They deserve a life sentence…waste of sperm!

  28. db105 says: Jun 21, 2012 11:38 PM

Only in America will we have some people making excuses for their bad behavior by calling it a “mistake.”

  29. discosucs2005 says: Jun 21, 2012 11:54 PM

Ugh I know this is going to be one of those posts that’s gets a lot of thumbs down and not a lot of actual replies but try to keep in mind that most people don’t join a gang out of choice. I’m obviously not defending beating up an old man, or anybody for that matter. I just hope it doesn’t ruin their whole lives. There have been people out there who have gotten a second chance and used it well and hopefully at least one of these kids can do the same.

Also, for anyone saying “kids these days” or saying that this is a product of this particular generation, keep in mind that gang violence among teenagers is actually down when controlled for population and economic status. Gang violence is still a huge problem, and probably will be for a very long time, but it’s certainly nothing new.

I absolutely cannot stand this generations young punks. They’re rude, arrogant, and think they’re entitled to the easy life.

  31. joetoronto says: Jun 22, 2012 5:51 AM

This is a terrible sign of the times we live in.

Check out the video of a 68 year old woman being bullied on a school bus by middle school kids, in NY State.

    Brutal.

  32. frankyvito says: Jun 25, 2012 8:45 AM

We can say “this generation” all we want, but it was the previous generation that raised them.
