The date for the DUI trial of the man known as DHB has been set.
Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey was in court in San Francisco Thursday and a judge said that the trial would start on July 23 unless the matter has been resolved ahead of time. Heyward-Bey was arrested on April 7 after blood alcohol tests showed levels of 0.12 and 0.13, both of which are above the legal limit of 0.08.
Earlier this week, Heyward-Bey’s attorney said he thought there were procedural issues with the stop and arrest of Heyward-Bey. That hints at what strategy they will be using to avoid a conviction or move toward some kind of lesser plea that wraps up the whole issue. Heyward-Bey could also face discipline from the league as a result of the arrest.
The Raiders open up training camp on July 29 in Napa, well after Heyward-Bey’s trial should be completed. He has earned strong notices for his work in the spring, part of a full offseason that should help him build on his strongest season to date.
