The bar is high for the 49ers, and the fans like it that way

For the first time in a long time, much is expected of the San Francisco 49ers.  As Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com sees it, the fans welcome the increased expectations.

Maiocco talked about the impact of last year’s 13-3 finish on this year’s edition of the team during Monday’s PFT Live.

Other topics included Aldon Smith’s recent stabbing, and Santa Clara County sticking it to the 49ers over $30 million in money that was supposed to be kicked into the stadium fund.

Anyone that has been or is currently a fan of a team that has zero expectations going into a season knows that high expectations are way better. The offseason is painful when you’re expecting a rebuilding year to come.

Most 49ers fans I know (most of whom are used to high expectations, and have experienced the high disappointment that sometimes follows) love the excitement of knowing that anything less than a Super Bowl will be seen as a failure.

Given the niners have had one good year in the last decade perhaps expecting a super bowl could be a little high. They should be happy to make the playoffs and be relevant again. Besides there is a good chance 2011 was a fluke. Now that Smith is under contract he will probably regress.

Liked the underdog role better…Seattles trying to fill that role but the difference is the Niners actually have talent and the Seahawks dont..Say hi to 6-10 and third place in the NFC West..

That’s the beauty of a winning franchise. Lions fans like me used to dream of thinking that way. Niners fans should think that way, they’ve finally put it all together and have made huge strides in twelve months. Week Two is going to be a lot of fun.

What high expectations are your friends used to? Trying rooting for a team that wins more than 1 playoff game in a decade then come back with your high expectations.

In Harbaugh we trust! This is the first time in a very long time that I believe the 9ers will dominate on every level. I’m still very respectful of many teams but I truly believe that no team is beyond our reach. GO NINERS!!!

Glorious just experienced the power of SF sports and wants his ballots stuffed too……

  8. cooklynn17 says: Jul 3, 2012 6:14 AM

Really, the last time the bar was set that high, they Petered out and lost to the Giants.

BTW, if my favorite team played in the NFC West, my bar would be set pretty high too, like every year.

its nice that the niners are building a billion dollar stadium while their state is crippled by unemployment…. PSLs on every seat is a nice touch as well…money money money

  10. darthhitman77 says: Jul 3, 2012 8:11 AM

Yep, word has it they’ve spent the off season watching the 2000 Ravens and chanting “They can win without a QB, so can we”.

i sure loved seeing the hurt and sadness on the 49ers fans faces after talkin smack all year about “super bowl bound” it is sickening to see everyone in the bay area jump on their bandwagon after being as quiet as churchhouse mouses for 15 years, i ride and die with my team, win, lose, or relocation, RAIDERS TIL I DIE,
    no bandwagon over here.

Non-fans of the 49ers expect them to be 6-10.

  13. raiderlyfe510 says: Jul 3, 2012 9:28 AM

Raiders are best team in The Bay. Too bad it can’t be proven on the field anymore because the 49ers are scared to play us.

  14. rc33 says: Jul 3, 2012 9:32 AM

They should have high expectation following a 13-3 season, lousy division and all.
That said, they have road games at Green Bay, the Jets, New Orleans and New England and home dates with Detroit, the Giants and Chicago. Welcome to “big boys” scheduling.
In the end, like all teams in their shoes who go from the outhouse to the penthouse in one season, I need to see ‘em do it again.

  15. nepaseahawk says: Jul 3, 2012 9:39 AM

not true music man…i expect them to win 9 or 10 this season, prob win the division..but not likely to win a superbowl with an underwhelming qb like smith. most of your fans expectations are absurdly high..good luck to you

most raider fans who often comment about san fran news sound like they wish they could be niner fans but are afraid to “come out”

It is easy to look good in the 2nd worst division in the league.

I can’t speak for the the trolls, but true Raider fans and true Niner fans share a pure and honest hate for each other. It’s a beautiful thing. Anyone can be a fan of any team. No need to wish. I wish we had Patrick Willis and the Niners had Rolando McClain, but I’d be a soccer fan or a stinking Seahawk fan before I would ever root for the Niners.

Can we stop with the easy division B.S. The 49ers beat the Giants, Saints, Cincinnati, Philly, and Detroit last year. They had the MOST players in the NFL Pro bowl and had the MOST players in the NFL players Top 100 list. Yeah – this is one of the top 3 MOST talented teams in the NFL. It has nothing to do with their weak division.

  21. nepaseahawk says: Jul 3, 2012 12:59 PM

nfc west is no longer an easy division……perhaps if the raiders joined the division it would be closer to the truth

  22. lionsownyou says: Jul 3, 2012 1:10 PM

The fans are going to be disappointed.
They’re going to start the season off 0-2 after playing the Packers and the Lions.
This will set the tone for the rest of their year. I wonder if you will all still love Jim Harbaugh so much after a 9-7 season.

The Bears fans will love us (until they come to the stick) as we will give them a fast start in the division. We will hang losses on The packers, lions and vikes in weeks 1-3

    @Randall

You do know that 49er history goes back further than a decade right? There was that 20 year stretch where we were competitive almost every year, not to mention 5 super bowls, second to only the Steelers.

So yes, most 49er fans know what it’s like to have high expectations for a team, because most 49er fans can remember back further than 10 years.

Only garbage teams with no history like Seattle get run from their own division. Twice.

You know you’re doing something right when other talk big, it shows fear. I like fear, because it allows you to see weakness. Ya’ll may be right and we do nothing…hahaha, sorry couldn’t finish the sentence. Love the hate, hit me back mid-season and then we’ll talk. Silly rabbits, LOL.

After growing up in the 80’s a die hard 9er fan, what was I supposed to expect from my team?? With a storied franchise like ours, EVERY season begins with extremely high expectations. Now that we have what appears to be a winning formula, and an extremely talented team, why would our expectations be anything but high?? If anything, we have strengthened a 13-3 team!

For all the division haters: I seem to remember a couple of NFC West teams playing in the Super Bowl pretty recently. Ask the Saints how fun it is to play in Seattle…
