He’s over 6’6″ and that’s a red flag too for most teams. Why? Name a successful NFL QB from any era that was over 6’5″ other than Joe Flacco. YOu can name a few more but they weren’t winners.

Nice limit on the size. Because at 6’5″, you would have to include Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Cam Newton, Philip Rivers…, and that is just current QB’s. But you’re probably right – if they were an inch taller, they wouldn’t have drafted them.

The Pats were both the best place and worst place for Mallett to start his career.

Best place because he’s been able to develop without of hint of pressure.

Worst because he’s got one of the most complex offenses in the NFL to learn.

Given all that he would still compete for a starting job on half the teams in the NFL

Pats will most definitely not trade him away. He will be an elite QB for the Pats and is far more talented than Cassell.

Despite the Doug Flutie article, I can understand the concern with someone being short (sight lines, batted down balls, etc), but I do not understand the concern with someone being too tall. I know there have not been many nameable tall QB’s but not sure why this would be a red flag. Anyone 6’6 or taller is most likely going to pushed towards basketball anyway so might explain why there have been so few.

Either way, short or tall the QB the coach will start the one who he feels gives them the best chance of winning. As things are anymore one bad season pretty much puts a coach on the hot seat.

There was never any question was never about his physical tools. The reason he dropped to the third round was concerns about his maturity and committment. After one year, he has done nothing to produce any regret. Actually his physical tools were questioned quite a bit. His height was an issue, and his lack of mobility were problems. And also the fact he struggled throwing on the move, and tended to throw ints at critical points in the game. I think his character was a lot bigger deal for the media than it was in reality for the teams. He’s over 6’6″ and that’s a red flag too for most teams. Why? Bottom line is the Pats want to trade either him or Hoyer. Hoyer could not get any interest during the free agency period at all despite pimping himself around the league.

So do the math. They were willing to let Hoyer walk but no one wanted him. Mallet couldn’t beat Hoyer out for the back up job last season and it doesn’t look like he is on track to do it this season. Basically you have two dogs that ain’t gonna hunt but look great in the truck.

Belicheat is no fool. Time to deal these dudes and look at some other talent. Now he’s got anyone who is for sale painting lipstick on them.

He has grown up a lot, but will never be a fit for Pats offense. Slow in decision making , big wind-up and a statue in the pocket. Not Brady’s successor, only trade bait to a team with the right offense.

It will be interesting to see how he does. He has a lot of potential, and learning under Brady for a couple years won’t hurt either.

Mallett is better than Cassell. His issues were character not talent, and I have heard NOTHING bad since he was drafted. (Yeah, still irks me that Ireland tried to get cute and got burned by the Pats). This kid could be very, very good but he is behind Brady. Barring injury, Mallett will not see the field. Even if Brady suddenly plays like garbage, he has earned quite a bit of time before the team decides to move on.

I think the Pats stole one by getting Mallett in the 3rd….when so many other Qb -needy teams passed on him in the 2nd.

It’s nice that Bobby Petrino has some free time now. Mallett ran his offense quite well–and he has a better arm than Cassell or Hoyer. It’ll be interesting to see how he’s developed in preseason.
