Newton is such a diva that he would find anything to be proud of. Winning six games isn’t something to be so proud of. But, the excuse will be that he was a rookie, and Peyton Manning didn’t win that many games when he was a rookie either.

Personally, I thought Andy Dalton had a much better year than Newton. Even though he didn’t win, he still made the playoffs. I do feel that is quite an achivement be it you first year or not.

Winning is important, but it’s not the end all be all of rating individual players. Marino might not be as good as Montana, but he’s a lot better than Dilfer. In fact, seeing as Smith was talking about games won and not Super Bowls, I would wager all the QBs you listed won a lot more games than Dilfer, so the logic still holds up.

Puhleez. Football is a team game. There 11 starters on D and O. As a player, you are either helping your team win or riding your teammate’s coat tail. There are only 2 games last year where A Smith significantly helped his team win (vs Eagles and vs Saints). Other than that, A Smith was a long for the ride of the best D in the league as well as David Aker’s performance.

Also, I dont recall a whole lot of A Smith Jerseys being worn at Candlestick last year or the previous 7 years. His jersey was being dumped on ebay. So all these A Smith fans are sudden bandwagon fans. But he will fall back to earth this year. those who think he had a break out year will be long disappointed. You can’t hide 7 years of track record.

But I am loving the guy who wrote that Smith/49ers were “lucky” to beat the Saints. What game were you watching?! The 9ers got 5 turnovers, but also dropped about 3 or 4 other ints. In the 4th Qtr the Saints big scores were a dump off pass to Sproles who turned it into a big play, and a should be int that Graham caught because Donte went for the int instead of the pass defend (and then landed on Willis preventing the tackle). On the flip side, Smith had two perfectly thrown, over the shoulder passes to V Davis in the final two drives. One that set up Smith running for a TD from 20 yards way, the other to set up a dart into a tiny window that Davis caught for the game winner. Where was the luck exactly? Not saying that the 9ers dominated the Saints, if they played 10 times, the 9ers would probably win 6, but that game was won by Smith and the 9ers, not by luck.

alex smith, you and your team would have to struggle to not be last in the nfc south. we have these things called quarterbacks and you can’t win our division by going 8-8.

Winning > Stats

His statements are more directed to the local media and fans who first complained he wasn’t winning games and than when the team wins the complaint is how they are winning.

At the end of the day do you really care how your team wins as long as it wins?

Do Raven’s fans want to the team to give back their Super Bowl rings because Trent Dilfer was the QB when they won it?

Stand your ground, stand behind what you said… Right/wrong, does not matter… You said it, and stand behind it….

I’m not sure you know what the word correlates means. He didn’t see a 100% correlation, he said a “better” correlation than passing yards.

And anyway Alex Smith is actually right, Teams that have more Yards per attempt (real yards per attempt that includes sacks) win 76% of their games since 2007 while teams that win the passing yards battle only win 54.4% of their games.
Real yards per attempt is one of the best stats that correlates to winning.

The 49ers will be better this year and so will Alex Smith. Those who think either hit their ceiling last year are mistaken.
