What the "heck you talking bout "Alex". Sorry bud your a bum!, a wash, your among the bottom half of the QB's in the league, and i stress bottom, like oh, say the bottom 5. Cam is a rookie an set the league on fire, Carolina is rebuilding and they have their corner stone. Be honest, your the reason he 49ers did'nt make it to the SuperBowl, you suck! and as long as your behind the QB the 49ers are going no where. So watch Cam's highlight then watch yours, oh i'm sorry, you dont have any. The 49ers have a mean "D" and a chance to win it all, but the league changes fast, their going no where with you alex, your not a top notch QB and never will be,you bottom basement at best.

The pressure will be on Smith this year as many are touting the 9ers as SB favorites. The QB has to eventually put up some numbers for that to happpen. They made a lot of good moves this year and if A.S. Doesn't contibute with solid #'s the next big move they make will be replacing him.

Alex Smith had 6 come from behind wins against the bengals, eagles, lions, giants, Seahawks and in the playoff the Saints. In addition they were 4th quarter come back wins as well...yes the defense help but Alex Smith help win games by throwing only 5 int and 3 were bad catches by the receivers. Smith will only improve and not decline because he will have the same successful head coach and OC for the 2nd consecutive season...in addition he's more motivated than ever to win.

Lots of haters today, mostly the unintelligent kind; plenty of talk, nothing to back it up. First, Alex has never claimed to be better than any QB. Second, why in all that's holy would Alex even consider a team like the Panthers, or Cowboys; that's cruel and unusual punishment. Doubt all you like, but most of teams spoken here couldn't compete at our level. The word by the way, smart guy, is anomaly; learn to spell. You only look more of an idiot when your comment is lame and misspelled. Please, if you can't contribute intelligently then just lie down and shhhhhh. See how nice that is? Mommy will bring you milk. It truly hurts to read this garbage sometimes.

I agree somewhat with what Smith said. Positive stats don't matter if it's an "L". However, being aware of stats--both positive and negative--help a player to improve.

Newton is such a diva that he would find anything to be proud of. Winning six games isn't something to be so proud of. But, the excuse will be that he was a rookie, and Peyton Manning didn't win that many games when he was a rookie either.

Personally, I thought Andy Dalton had a much better year than Newton. Even though he didn't win, he still made the playoffs. I do feel that is quite an achivement be it you first year or not.

"So by Alex Smith’s “winning” logic, Trent Dilfer is a better QB than Dan Marino, Jim Kelly and Warren Moon????"

This extreme argument is the most cliche and oft repeated statement on the topic.

Winning is important, but it's not the end all be all of rating individual players. Marino might not be as good as Montana, but he's a lot better than Dilfer. In fact, seeing as Smith was talking about games won and not Super Bowls, I would wager all the QBs you listed won a lot more games than Dilfer, so the logic still holds up.

I feel that the Saints had some unfortunate breaks in the first half that were uncharacheristic of the team. For instance the 17 pts off turnovers that the 9'ers were spotted in the first half. I am still disappointed that the Sainsts lost, they almost won still, but our defense gave it away, just like the year before in Seattle. The 9er's won that day, but it won't have the same ending this year. We will see how the 9er's can play on a dry indoor field instead of the bog know as Candlestick. Alex won't be so fortunate again.

So by Alex Smith's "winning" logic, Trent Dilfer is a better QB than Dan Marino, Jim Kelly and Warren Moon????

Puhleez. Football is a team game. There 11 starters on D and O. As a player, you are either helping your team win or riding your teammate's coat tail. There are only 2 games last year where A Smith significantly helped his team win (vs Eagles and vs Saints). Other than that, A Smith was a long for the ride of the best D in the league as well as David Aker's performance.

Also, I dont recall a whole lot of A Smith Jerseys being worn at Candlestick last year or the previous 7 years. His jersey was being dumped on ebay. So all these A Smith fans are sudden bandwagon fans. But he will fall back to earth this year. those who think he had a break out year will be long disappointed. You can't hide 7 years of track record.

Not sure why non 49ers fans hate Smith so much these days. He's a pretty nice guy and hasn't really said anything that isn't true.

But I am loving the guy who wrote that Smith/49ers were "lucky" to beat the Saints. What game were you watching?! The 9ers got 5 turnovers, but also dropped about 3 or 4 other ints. In the 4th Qtr the Saints big scores were a dump off pass to Sproles who turned it into a big play, and a should be int that Graham caught because Donte went for the int instead of the pass defend (and then landed on Willis preventing the tackle). On the flip side, Smith had two perfectly thrown, over the shoulder passes to V Davis in the final two drives. One that set up Smith running for a TD from 20 yards way, the other to set up a dart into a tiny window that Davis caught for the game winner. Where was the luck exactly? Not saying that the 9ers dominated the Saints, if they played 10 times, the 9ers would probably win 6, but that game was won by Smith and the 9ers, not by luck.

alex smith, you and your team would have to struggle to not be last in the nfc south. we have these things called quarterbacks and you can’t win our division by going 8-8.

Well... Niners beat the Bucs and Saints, Rams beat the Saints, Cards beat the Panthers, but yeah the Falcons beat the Seahawks....so NFC WEST vs NFC SOUTH= 4 west wins vs 1 south win......“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”.

Smart of him to step away from his comments though.

The guy is clearly jealous of any fellow 1st rnd pick that plays better than him. Which....most of them have/do.

And, on this NFC south thing, let's keep something in mind. Last season, the Niners had a +151 point differential which was 100 points better than the second place team, the Falcons, in the NFC south. That +151 point differential was third in the NFC behind the Packers and the Saints. So, sorry to break your hate bubbles, but if the Niners were in the NFC south, they'd be battling the Saints for the division lead and the other three teams would be toast.

Alex has "been quite/kept his mouth shut" since he was drafted until last season...could've ripped the 49ers organization on a year-to-year basis based on the way things were going. So go ahead a speak your mind Alex, we know you'll back it up on the field...and so does he.

P.S. - Notice all the comments above me trashin' this dude...welcome to NFL relevance Alex. Niners All Day!

All Alex is saying what every fan (well the non fantasy kind) wants to hear from their QB and that's

Winning > Stats

His statements are more directed to the local media and fans who first complained he wasn't winning games and than when the team wins the complaint is how they are winning.

At the end of the day do you really care how your team wins as long as it wins?

Do Raven's fans want to the team to give back their Super Bowl rings because Trent Dilfer was the QB when they won it?

"Actually, only one stat truly correlates to winning: points scored vs. points allowed, as determined on a per-game basis."

I'm not sure you know what the word correlates means. He didn't see a 100% correlation, he said a "better" correlation than passing yards.

And anyway Alex Smith is actually right, Teams that have more Yards per attempt (real yards per attempt that includes sacks) win 76% of their games since 2007 while teams that win the passing yards battle only win 54.4% of their games.
Real yards per attempt is one of the best stats that correlates to winning.
