I am so tired of 40 yard dash times being in discussions. I think that they need to start using 40 times with full pads on……..that would truly simulate football game top end speed.
_____________

The goal of measuring a 40 yard dash time is not to measure actual game speed nor to measure how effective the receiver will literally be. Just like the bench press or the vertical jump, it's a measure of base athleticism. The second these numbers hit the presses everyone starts whining about "how often do receivers/linemen/quarterbacks actually run forty yards down the field in a straight line?"

That isn't the point: the point is a baseline test of "how athletic is this guy in his underwear compared to other players performing similar tests in their underwear?" They are not supposed to be, andd never have been a realistic demonstration of how the player will literally produce on the field: no interior lineman will ever run forty yards down the field in a straight line, or jump straight up in the air as high as they can, but they give scouts and GM's a concrete test to compare the baseline athleticism of two different linemen or quarterbacks or defensive ends or whatever. While forty yard dash times may be more telling and make more of a statement when it comes to receivers, it is still extremely rare for an NFL wide out to ever run 40 yards in a straight line in an actual game situation.

All that said, the reason 40 yard dash times are reported the way they are is because that is what the public wants. They are the easiest numbers for the public to process, understand, and compare, and therefore the most newsworthy. 40 yard dash time reports are here to stay, and complaining about them is just silly, like whining about interviews with incoming rookie quarterbacks on the basis of "Why do we care about what they have to say? They haven't taken one NFL snap yet."

I wouldn't be happy if the Browns used a #2 on him only because it would be the second time in less than 2 years they used a #2 on a WR who did not play at all the previous year and that receiver (Greg Little) had more than a little rust coming close to leading the NFL in drops. If he is still there when the Browns come up for the 3rd round I would say take him.

I have to quote daysend564, if he ran in the low 4.4's I could see him as a second, and someone with a late second still may take him because he is unlikely to be there when their turn comes around in the following round, but I would not be against a 3rd rounder for my Browns as bad as we need receivers.

I dont know, think there has been so much hype on this guy someone will spend a 2nd on him. Im sure you can find a more ready reciever in next years draft with a 2nd or 3rd pick. He likely wont contribute much to any team this year.

I am so tired of 40 yard dash times being in discussions. I think that they need to start using 40 times with full pads on........that would truly simulate football game top end speed.

About the only thing the 40 yard times show is how fast the cops may need to be if they ever have to catch him after a workout!! After the player pushes one of the them for resisting arrest when he was not being arrested!! LOL!!

The Texans should submit a 3rd round pick for him. Kevin Walter cannot play forever plus they will get a compensatory 3rd round pick if Mario Williams plays well for the Bills this season so they are really not giving up the pick.

If he was in the 4.4 range, someone would have given up a 2nd round pick for him. Since he was 4.52, he'll go for a 3rd.
