Drew has a starting point of $40 Mil guaranteed over 2 years. The only way he doesn’t is if the Saints have told him there is no way they’re using the tag on him next year. Looking at a new 5-6 year deal, I think the guarantee has to be between $50-$60 mil, or probably more.

This reminds me of the Larry Fitzgerald situation a few years back when he was on the hook to the Cards for more than $30 mil in the last 2 years of his rookie deal and they had to give him 4 yrs, $40 mil pretty much all guaranteed to free up cap space.

Obvious differences, I know, but if the Cardinals could do it (Keep cap flexibility and appease their superstar, while having less leverage), whats keeping the Saints from doing it (Chance of losing the franchise savior, with the alternative of going 3 deep at QB with Daniel, McCown, and Cannfield)?

I love the Saints and yes Drew Brees is one of the best things to ever happen for the team and the city of New Orleans. I also understand why he is being cautious after what happened to him playing under the tag in San Diego but enough is enough. Initially I wondered what the hell the Saints were doing by dragging this out but more and more this seems to be falling on the shoulders of Brees. He’s basically handcuffing the team and the longer this goes more and more people will start to side with the team. Saints fans like all other fans love their TEAM. We all like our team to win but at the end of the day we still love them no matter how much they win or who the QB is. Get of your pedistal “Saint Drew” and sign the offer that makes you the highest paid player in NFL history. This team has been through enough.

Two questions….1) How much was the saints worth in 2005 before Brees got there.

2) How are they worth now????

Brees deserves everything he is asking for, let’s remember people the saints could have and should have locked him up last year..but looms rolled the dice and lost BIG time…now it’s time to ante up and pay the man.

Except for the fact that Condon mouthpiece Mortensen has put it out there that they disdain PM’s deal with Denver (19 mill/yr) because they feel that PM could have gotten 25 mill+ from another team.
Maybe DB wants his money before the team has to see more of him playing sans Payton as his playcaller. Some of those games last year were pretty rough for him, like vs TB I think.

And the greed continues. He thinks he’s better than Peyton. Are you kidding? Peyton carried an entire team, as was proven when he went down and his team couldn’t buy a game. Brees goes down his team will continue to win. That is the difference. Stop being a greedy pig. Your team is going through a difficult time right now and you adding to it with your greediness is making it even worse. You are NOT the number 1 QB in the league. Get over yourself.

Wasn’t the idea of the rookie wage scale to prevent unproven players from receiving large unearned paydays and then to allow that money to be spent on prove players that earned it? Didn’t Bradford sign a 6year $86million deal with $51million guaranteed over the first 4 years? Would you trade Bradford for Brees? They aren’t even in the same ballpark? Pay the man and quit squabbling the teams got the break on the rookie scale and now they want to keep the money.

Sorry, but no QB on the wrong side of 30 is worth that kind of investment (not even mentioning the $20 million/yr you would have to pay him). At best Brees has maybe 5 years left anyway. Belichek would trade away Brady for that haul of picks.

There’s millions of families struggling financially, but $19 million a year isn’t enough for this guy.

I was a Charger fan back when LT and Brees were together. I watched that Broncos game where Gerard Warren fell on Brees (intentionally to injure him); watched as Brees walked back to the sideline holding his right arm. I thought then and there that his career was over. God, I HATE the Broncos.

I’m a tough guy, but I had tears in my eyes when Brees won that SuperBowl, and held up his son while accepting the trophy. Brees played last year without a long-term contract. He has every right to ask for more money because he’s been putting up video game numbers while playing for only $10mill a year, and winning a SB. When the salary cap rises several years from now, $20mill a year won’t be more than 15%, almost nothing for the MVP of the team. If you think this money is big, why don’t you look at baseball players’ salaries. ARod makes $30mill and he sucks.

Matter of principle now. Brees wants his #1 QB guaranteed money. He feels he’s better than Peyton and arguably he is. Only way this is gonna get done. Pay him now and lock him up or end up paying him more next year or lose him altogether. Either way, you lose Benson and Saints. Pay the man and stop this BS circle jerk.

As a Saints fan, I believe that no one player can command that much of the cap space. No player, not even Brees. If Drew does not sign a long term deal, I would shop him around for draft picks and a starting QB. Three number ones + two number twos and an existing starter. Of course there is no progress. Brees wants more than the Saints are willing to shell out.

They have to think of the future of the team, how they’re going to pay vet players, uprising rookie stars, and how this impacts them if there is an injury.

Brees is not giving them a “hometown discount,” and that’s a shame considering the Saints are where he became a star.

And so the drew brees greed saga continues! What a classy guy, sorry, but this is getting out of control.! I understand that you want to get as much as you can, and feed the family, but when will he realize that his entire team suffers????? I’m not a drew hater, but I am turning into one with each passing day! Cmon drew, 19,000,000 + a season is unbelievable…. To the saints franchise, don’t buckle, tag him, and make him play this season….. Then see if he’s worth the 20+ million after this season…. Does he think he’s the best quarterback in the game??? If so, he needs to watch every analyst talk about why he is 2 and really should be 3…. I would take Tom Brady any day of the week. After 2 years, I will take the future all day….. Welcome to the league of luck!!! The next big thing!!!

I love the one-sidedness of NFL contracts.

If the team is unhappy the player is gone. If Brees or any other player is ever unhappy in the middle of a deal, they’re stuck.
