Amid no signs of serious talks, Brees optimistic deal will get done

The Saints and quarterback Drew Brees now sit less than four days from the deadline for working out a long-term deal, under the rules of the franchise tag.

And while there are no signs that the two sides have engaged in serious discussions, Brees expressed optimism at the ESPYs on Wednesday that the situation will get resolved.

I’m an eternal optimist, so I’m still very confident a deal will get done by Monday,” Brees said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

“I think I’ve been around this league long enough to understand how this works at times.  In a lot of cases, it does go down to the wire, and you need a stopping point in order to bring everyone together and make sure it can get done.  That stopping point is Monday, so let’s hope we get something done by then.”

There could be reason soon for more widespread optimism.  We’ve caught wind of a looming report from one of the New Orleans media outlets that Brees will sign a long-term deal on Friday.

On one hand, a couple of members of the New Orleans media were pushing weeks ago the notion that a long-term deal was imminent.  On the other hand, there aren’t many days left for something to get done.

  1. He’s optimistic because he’s going to hold out for more as long as he can before camp and then sign what is on the table at that time.. If it’s what was reported he knows he’s okay with what they’ve offered. But why not try and squeeze as much out of them as you can why you still have the opportunity. This likely will be the contract that sets him and his family up for the rest of there lives. No way he passes up 19 million a year and misses training camp.

  2. Did anyone really think that when this was over there wouldn’t be an agreement and a long term deal signed? With the year they had? Anyone?

  3. Sign the deal on the table or play for the tag this year and get re-tagged next year. Then I HOPE the saints trade him to Miami or another team lekr them next year for a couple of fists and save the cap spacve while drafting hopefult a franchise QB with whixh ever ends up being the first pick in the first round next ,and use most of the rest of the horrible Defense we have.

well said. he knows where his bread is buttered, too. if he plays anywhere else, he’s an above average quarterback. but with the offensive weapons he has in new orleans, he’s a superstar

  5. As a lifelong saints fan, yes I even made it through the Baghdad days, I am thoroughly disgusted with the current regime. It’s not enough that the players and coaches embarrassed themselves and the city or that Benson is having his own organization investigated, but now Drews greed is adding to our misery. I hate to say it but I don’t see us winning more than 5 or 6 games this year. It will take a Christmas miracle to save this franchise. Santa?

  6. Imagine that. A multimillionaire celebrity calls himself “an eternal optimist.” Thanks Drew; you’ve inspired the masses.

  7. On another site someone pointed out that with what he’s been offered, 11 years in the NFL will put 160 mil in his pocket. I did the math on one year at 19.5- if you make 50K per year, it would take 390 years to pay Brees his 2012 offer. Poor baby, screaming over 500K per year. It’s an EGO trip, he simply wNts to be paid the MOST. Not fairly, but the MOST. That my friends is greed and orima-donna BS. Tag him. Play him and bus him in 2013. What if he has a Peyton Manning injury? And hes guaranteed four-5 more years. Get over yourself Drew, sickening when you really think about it. I didn’t even mention the morale or the bountygate stuff that needs him to step up. Weak
