Great write up about the Panthers, I will say I’d raise my hand for the D-Line though. These guys aren’t the most spectacular bunch but with the right rotation I think they can be effective. I like Applewhite and Kieser.
You failed to mention the cornerback problem opposite Chris Gamble, I like Captain quite a bit but he is more suited for the nickelback.
Still, great post, as a Panthers fan I really enjoyed it, thanks Darin Gantt. I’m glad you joined the PFT team.

I love Applewhite but not as a starter. I think the Panthers will go 8-8 or so.

Next year they’ll have to take some D-Line and a mid round pick on a runningback, as it doesn’t make sense to keep two top tier runningbacks with the possibilities Cam Newton presents both as a runner and passer.

Surprised no mention of Greg Olsen or Jeremy Shockey here. Are they still on the team? If so, those are viable weapons for a young quarterback.

These rankings have a lot of in depth analysis and they may be right, Carolina may be 17th (or 7 or 27). The fact is that no one really knows. I think it would be interesting at the end of the season if all the predictors compared their preseason picks to the reality of the season’s records.

I think it’s hard to argue this ranking, but I want to — so maybe you could make a case for them somewhere between 14-17.

Wow thats a lot of flaws for #17. Sounds like the Newton to Smith connection and the running game is the only thing going for carolina. Defense should go from bad to okay and special teams is rebuilding…I think someone has a crush on Cam.

Also you dont think having a year worth of film on Newton isn’t going to help def coordinators?

Seems rather high to me. They were 6-10 last year and are ranked ahead of several young teams that had better records. Newton should improve, but the rest of the team still seems a long way from playoff competitive, which is what a team ranked this high should be. Especially in that division.

Being at the top of the bottom half of the league is about as best as this team can hope for. I doubt they can ascend any further with that roster.
