The Denver Broncos are taking a wait-and-see approach on star defensive end Elvis Dumervil, who was arrested over the weekend in Miami for felony aggravated assault with a firearm.
Broncos front office boss John Elway said on NBC SportsTalk that he hasn’t heard Dumervil’s side of the story and doesn’t know all the facts, and that the Broncos don’t have much to say about the matter until the facts come out.
“I have not had a chance to talk to Elvis, but I think these are always situations that they get so much traction early,” Elway said. “We’re going to wait to see what happened, hear everything that went on and then make some judgment at that time. But we’re withholding judgment until we hear everything that went on.”
Ultimately, it will be the league office -- not the Broncos -- that decides whether Dumervil faces a suspension or any other type of discipline for this incident, in which he is accused of displaying a gun during a road rage dispute. And the league office may view Dumervil, who was cited for assault and disturbing the peace in 2010, as a repeat offender who needs to serve a suspension to get the message that Roger Goodell wants players to stay out of trouble off the field.
