Kris Dielman considers coming out of retirement

Five months after retiring because of concerns about concussions, Kris Dielman is having second thoughts about that decision.

Dielman is considering coming out of retirement and two sources said he’s close to a return to the field, according to Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego.

The Chargers have released Dielman from the reserve/retired list, which means he would be a free agent if he decides to play.

Dielman stepping back on the field would be a major surprise, because all indications when he announced his retirement were that this decision was final, and was made at the urging of his doctors. In Dielman’s last game, on October 23 against the Jets, he suffered a concussion, kept playing and then suffered a seizure on the flight home. That incident led the league office to tell game officials to look for concussion symptoms and alert team medical staffs when players appear to suffer brain injuries on the field.

The 31-year-old Dielman went to four straight Pro Bowls before last season and could be a significant addition to some team’s offensive line, if he’s cleared to play.
