Reggie Wayne preaches patience with Andrew Luck

Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne called it a load off the team’s shoulders that quarterback Andrew Luck agreed to a deal this week.

That would seem evident without any comment for Wayne, but there’s a practical reason why the veteran wideout is happy to know that Luck won’t miss a second of camp because of the contract. He and Luck haven’t spent much time working together since the Colts made the Stanford product the first overall pick in April as Luck was marooned in Palo Alto waiting for the school year to end.

Luck and Wayne got together with Colts receivers Donnie Avery and Griff Whalen in Miami recently, but Wayne knows that they still have plenty of work to do between now and the start of the regular season.

“It’s going to take some time,” Wayne said, via the Indianapolis Star. “It was only a few days, so we’ll just take it one day at a time and we’ll go from there. That’s why we have training camp. Hopefully in training camp, we can get some chemistry going and everything will be all right.”

Even with Luck there from day one, it will probably take longer than training camp for Luck, Wayne and the rest of the Colts offense to get totally in sync. Getting there before the year is out and laying the foundation for future seasons is what’s significant as the Colts begin this new phase in franchise history.
