The 49ers surprised a lot of folks by emerging as a powerhouse NFC team in 2011 -- Jim Harbaugh’s first year as head coach. But it’s not out of the ordinary for teams that “surprise” one year, to take a big step back in the next. Seeing as we ranked the Niners as the NFL’s fourth best team entering training camp, it is our opinion that Harbaugh’s club will stay comfortably atop the NFC West division and avoid major regression.
