LaRon Landry will start training camp on the PUP list

Jets safety LaRon Landry has insisted all offseason that he will be physically ready for the start of the regular season.

He’s not ready for the start of training camp, though. The Jets announced Monday that Landry is one of four players they have placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list as they prepare to head up to Cortland for camp. Those players count against the 90-man roster limit and can be activated at any time.

Landry did not take part in OTAs or minicamp after signing with the Jets as a free agent, raising concerns about the Achilles injury that limited him with the Redskins. Washington doctors wanted Landry to have surgery, something he has resisted and his condition was questionable enough that the Jets build protections against injury into his contract. The Jets haven’t made a big deal about his absence and, as mentioned, Landry insists he’ll be fine when the bell rings.

The Jets should certainly hope so. After getting substandard play at safety last season and with Eric Smith, one of the reasons for that substandard play, as the option in the event of Landry’s absence, the Jets really need a healthy Landry in their secondary.

Two draft picks -- linebacker Demario Davis and wide receiver Jordan White -- join Landry and guard Terrence Campbell on the PUP list.
