Falcons LB Lofa Tatupu out for the season again

Upon further review, signing Mike Peterson was a sign.

Falcons coach Mike Smith announced Tuesday that linebacker Lofa Tatupu will miss the entire season with a pectoral injury suffered in the weight room last week.

“As you know, Lofa suffered a pectoral injury last week,” Smith said, via the Falcons’ official website. “After further testing, it was determined that he would require a procedure to repair the injury and unfortunately he will miss the entire season.”

Tatupu missed all of last year, amid suspicions he was breaking down physically after knee problems and a string of concussions with Seattle.

He was expected to compete for a starting job with Akeem Dent, but Dent will likely make that one his own, allowing them to use Peterson as a backup as they did last year.

Tatupu signed a two-year deal with a $600,000 signing bonus, which was a significant guarantee for a guy who didn’t play the year before.

Guy can’t catch a break. He went from one of the top linebackers in the game to now missing 2 seasons in a row partially due to injury. Shouldn’t happen to anyone and hopefully he recovers and has a bounce back year.

Does that mean he still gets the $600k?

What don’t you understand about a signing bonus?
The moment they sign, they walk away with the cash.
I suppose you now need to know what the helmets are used for!?!

Bummer…watched Lofa at SC and in Seattle and he was a true playmaker, was looking forward to seeing him in the ATL….If he tries to come back next year he’ll at least be “fresh” from 2 years off, but unfortunately it looks like he’ll have trouble staying healthy over a full season…..

Better a $600,000 sb to Lofa than several million bonus & guaranteed money for Curtis Lofton, one of the finest 2 down linebackers around. Throw that 3rd round pick in there (Akeem Olajuwon Dent).

Coming back strong after two years off following a major injury isn’t exactly outside the realm of possibility though.

Garrison Hearst lost 2 years and ended up becoming the first player to come back from Avascular Necrosis(he got it in his ankle, it’s the same condition that happened in Bo Jackson’s hip that caused him to retire from football).

I guess that pretty much ends it for him. I’m sure he realizes it’s time to move on to the next phase of life. Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing him play and have a guy with that much class on the team.
