Cowboys place five players on the PUP list

Cornerback Mike Jenkins reported to Cowboys camp as expected on Wednesday, but he’s not ready to get on the field.

Jenkins is still recovering from shoulder surgery and will start camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list. Jenkins was shopped for a trade during the draft and his desire for a ticket out of town kept him away from the team’s workouts this spring. He was at the mandatory minicamp to avoid fines, although his inability to do any work has kept the Cowboys from knowing what he can do and when he will be able to do it.

The team also announced that there will be four players joining Jenkins on the PUP list at the start of camp. Guard Mackenzy Bernadeau has a hip injury, creating more uncertainty in the interior of the offensive line for a Dallas team that needs to be much better in that area this season. Kevin Kowalski, another interior lineman, has an ankle injury that also kept him off the field during OTAs and minicamp.

Two of this year’s draft picks are also out of action at the moment. Fourth-round safety Matt Johnson has a hamstring injury and fifth-round wide receiver Danny Coale’s bid for snaps in the offense has been slowed by a broken foot.

Cowboys rookies and injured veterans were the only players to report on Wednesday. The full team will hold its first practice on Monday.
