Redskins claim Dezmon Briscoe off waivers

Wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe didn’t have to wait long to find a new home after getting waived by the Buccaneers on Thursday.

Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com reports that the Redskins claimed Briscoe off of waivers on Friday. The Redskins have reshaped their receiving corps this offseason by adding Pierre Garçon and Josh Morgan and releasing Jabar Gaffney, but it’s not clear where there would be a spot for Briscoe. Leonard Hankerson and Santana Moss are the favorites for the two other spots in the top four of the depth chart and there are plenty of other players vying for any leftover spots, so Briscoe’s definitely got his work cut out for him.

It won’t help his cause that Briscoe failed to show up to Bucs camp in good enough shape to pass Greg Schiano’s conditioning test, according to the Tampa Bay Times. He wasn’t a regular attendee at the team’s offseason workouts so that failure likely amounted to the last straw for Schiano, who has spent much of the offseason clearing the roster of players from the Raheem Morris years.

Morris is now in Washington, of course, which probably helped Briscoe land on his feet. Given the looks of things on the depth chart, Briscoe, who had 35 catches for 387 yards last season and led the Buccaneers with six touchdown catches, will need more of that help to wind up on the 53-man roster.
