Actually this isn’t even a hold out. Wallace has played and “honored” all 3 years of the contract he signed when he entered the league. The Steelers were rewarded with very good receiver production on the cheap over the last 3 years. Wallace is a free agent ableit restricted. This is just a negotiation for a new contract. One in which the team has the upper hand due to the CBA but a contract negotiation still. So Wallace can sign the $2.7 million 1st round tender offer, try to push for a long term deal, go the Vincent Jackson route and sit out until mid season and then sign the tender (in order to trigger his true free agency year next year), or sit out the entire season (not his best option since his true free agent year will be wiped out and he’d face the same situation next year).

Wallace’s Rookie contract paid him a total of $1.74 million over 3 years. Even if he were to sit out half the year and sign the tender for the rest of the season he may get around $1 million. More than he made last season. (Since this is not a contract hold out fines do not come into play)

Next year the Steelers can either franchise him at about $9 – $10 million for the year, sign him to a long term deal, or let him walk via free agency.

Knowing all that sitting out till mid season is Wallace’s best option if he’s willing to take this hard ball tactic to its conclusion. The money Wallace will leave on the table (about $1 million) while not insignificant is not that great in the grand scheme of things. It worked very well for Vincent Jackson. The year after Jackson sat out till mid season before signing his 1st round tender he was franchised and made about $8 million. Then afterwards he signed a free agent deal potentially worth $55 million.

No, like Holmes, Wallace, Brown, and Sanders. Why bring up sweed? Every team whiffs on a few picks, but for the last five years Pitt has gotten more production from their mid-round WRs than just about everyone else. Holmes wasn’t an untalented player, he was a head case. Wallace is good, just not as good as he thinks he is. Brown just got an extension showing his value. And Sanders is on the rise.

Pittsburgh is transforming from a ground-n-pound offense to a more pass friendly offense. It’s a long transition for them because they are a SB contender each season and are not just rebuilding from scratch. So the changes have been gradual.

How come Wallace was the greatest thing since sliced bread when he wasn’t in a contract dispute, but now that he is, he is an expendable “one trick pony”?

And how come now that Antonio “2 career TDs” Brown is locked up, he’s suddendly the next Jerry Rice?

Remember when the Plax, Randel El, and Holmes departures were all going to be PIT’s downfall and they were going to make the Steelers regret letting them go? And the teams they went to predictably made them their #1 WR’s? If Wallace plays, great. If he doesn’t play then his position/role is open to the next hungry player that wants to step up.

Wallace is very good, but everyone knows he is not worth a Fitzgerald-size contract. But $2.7 million is an insult too [look at his stats]. Pay Wallace $50 million over 5 years with $25 million guaranteed. Then the Steelers will have two young talented WRs locked in for years.

Also, no team will trade for him and give the Steelers a 1st round pick, since they already had that opportunity and passed. The best the Steelers could get in a trade would be a 2nd round pick. They can play him 6-12 games this year, THEN get a 3rd round comp pick next year. Although they may not want him in the locker room this year.

Just to set the record straight….worst case scenario for the Steelers……Wallace holds out first 10 games, signs his tender and plays the last 6 games, wanting to play his best for free agency…they get a fresh Wallace for the playoff run, THEN they get a 3rd round comp pick next year when he leaves for free agency. Wallace was a 3rd round pick.

Antonio Brown out-performed Wallace during the second half of last year because Wallace faced constant double teams. Wallace is a really good player. Antonio Brown has yet to prove he can handle double coverage.

Wide receivers are shiny hood ornaments; they look nice but are totally replaceable. They aren’t game-changers. Anyone talking about “Larry Fitzgerald money” forgets that the Cards haven’t done jack with Larry without a decent quarterback throwing to him.

The Steelers have been to three Super Bowls since ’05. They know what they’re doing.

Holmes was replaced by Wallace. That is why the Steelers traded Holmes, because Wallace was better than him. By the way, the Jets WAY over paid Holmes.

The ONLY reason the Holmes won the MVP was because of Bens reputation. Had he not been accused, he would have won it, AND Ben deserved it, NOT Holmes.

Rodgers you can compare to Ben. To mention Cutler and Flacco, and put either of them in the league of Ben Roethlisberger shows that you don’t understand the game of football what-so-ever.

Finally, we get a reasonable take on this situation. For months, we’ve been getting fed unjustifiably optimistic PolyAnna-ish “reports” about how it’s a fait accompli that Wallace will re-sign in Pittsburgh.

Where have we ever seen any evidence that Wallace isn’t out for crazy money? Once he publicly declared he was worthy of Larry (certain future HOF’er) Fitzgerald money – it became very clear what we could expect. And sure enough, here we are.

You want to know who we’ve seen a lot of evidence they wanted to stay in Pittsburgh? Check out Antonio Brown’s track record.

Very simple call – it was all along. Not a hindsight thing — a longheld belief on both takes that was a common sense thing.
