Aaron Rodgers says Packers will be better this year

Terrell Manning AP

After a 15-1 season that ended in a divisional-round loss to the Giants, the Packers have high expectations for 2012.

And that’s fine with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.  Because Rodgers thinks the Packers actually will be improved.

We’re going to be a better team this year,” Rodgers told reporters on Monday, via Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com.  “We’re going to play better.  We’ll be better up front [on defense], I think.  Different attitude, I think.  We brought in some guys with some nasty to them.”

Rodgers isn’t saying that means the team will win 15 or even 16 games, but that they’ll be “more sound” when it counts.

“I think there was a little bit of some too-comfortable mentality,” Rodgers said.  “One of the things that winning does is it masks some of the issues you might have.  When you have a real successful season, the little things get swept under the rug and the big things become little things.  It’s hard to knock a team on energy and enthusiasm and effort when you’re still going out and winning.  But it can catch up to you at some point, and it did with us.”

It did because the Packers had trouble tackling last year.  And generating pressure on opposing quarterbacks.  And they relied too much on Rodgers to save their bacon.  And then when they found themselves on the wrong end of a home playoff game against the Giants, the flaws that nevertheless allowed them to lose only one game during the season prevented them from winning the one game that meant more than any other.

Rodgers’ remarks arguably could be interpreted as a slap at last year’s defense, which could be a problem since plenty of those players are back.  We (or at least I) view Rodgers’ words as realistic and aspirational.

The best team during the 2011 regular season can still get a lot better.  And if the defense improves, it will.  And in the end the Packers could have their second Super Bowl win in three years.

he’s right. green bay is most likely going to dominate this year.

Time for that league and Super Bowl MVP repeat Aaron! WOO HOO!

  3. vikings28 says: Jul 30, 2012 4:31 PM

It’ll be hard pressed to get better than last year. Good luck, but I think they will regress this year because last year was really good. It’s hard to duplicate that in back to back seasons.

  4. mjkelly77 says: Jul 30, 2012 4:31 PM

Better than 15-1? Bet the house.

  5. Carl Gerbschmidt says: Jul 30, 2012 4:35 PM

That 2nd round playoff loss last year was the best thing that could have happened to them. This team will be playing with an intensity and level of focus never before seen by an NFL team.

It’s funny how your interpretations change from player to player.

Packers are a great team and I expect them to win the North but there defense is suspect and there is some otger teams like the 9ers,Giants ,Saints and Bears that might give them trouble..But when you have a star like Rodgers its hard to argue.

  8. ickky says: Jul 30, 2012 4:39 PM

Packers will be a good team this year, but not a great one.

  9. pjrhc says: Jul 30, 2012 4:39 PM

We better improve, with the Bears healthy and the Lions tougher, our division (well, 3 outta 4) will be tougher to win.

A lot of young Packer players (and young fans) thought that after the Super Bowl win, success every year would come the same way. Now they know that it isn’t so, and that should help them and motivate them. I don’t think they’ll go 15-1 this year, but barring key injuries I think they’ll make the playoffs and make a much better showing than they did last time. Rodgers always keeps a mellow exterior, but he’s really psyched to be better this year, and his teammates should be also.

another one and done in the playoffs is my prediction, sitting at home watching the SB!!

  12. mvp43 says: Jul 30, 2012 4:41 PM

He’s right, they will be better team even though they may have a few more losses. Everyone knows what their problems were, even the defense knows they were the problem, Woodson has said as much. Without checking, I’m guessing the Packers averaged 27-28 ppg?….if the D can get any pressure up the middle they will dominate.

  13. packman80 says: Jul 30, 2012 4:42 PM

I don’t think anyone can think negatively about Rodgers’ comments. They’re spot on. He’s not saying that their record will be better, he’s saying that as a team, they’ll play better. 15-1 means nothing if you don’t win it all. I would say that the 10-6 super bowl team was a LOT better than last years team. Last years team proved that without a good defense, you’re not going to go very far.

  14. spankdatazz says: Jul 30, 2012 4:44 PM

green bay will struggle to win 8 games this year.

  15. gregm5s7 says: Jul 30, 2012 4:45 PM

Saw the tweet earlier today, this is the day he officially signed the papers and became a Packer 7 years ago.

Rodgers is the NFL epitome of intelligence + ability. Season START ALL READY!!!

  16. skeebo80 says: Jul 30, 2012 4:46 PM

Please maybe they’ll be better but an 0-1 start I think because the Niners will be even better than them.

  17. ijsisk says: Jul 30, 2012 4:47 PM

Green bay will be good but not better than the bears.

    Bear down!

  18. asondej says: Jul 30, 2012 4:50 PM

Last I checked he doesn’t play defense.

  19. jonny42671 says: Jul 30, 2012 4:59 PM

Biggest phony in the league , Brees is not to far behind

  20. stairwayto7 says: Jul 30, 2012 4:59 PM

They go 16-0 and lose in NFC Championship game? Thats better than 15-1 and losing in divisional round..

  21. ninerdynasty says: Jul 30, 2012 5:04 PM

Week 1 should be a good measuring stick.. Scary that they can be better than last year. I see them getting better on D but on Offense.. they are already dynamite..

  22. conormacleod says: Jul 30, 2012 5:07 PM

Shocking! Find me a QB that says his team will be worse this year. It’s more likely the Packers will be worse.

  23. bullcharger says: Jul 30, 2012 5:09 PM

I don’t see what he sees… Woodson is a year older, some pieces were lost and the replacement parts aren’t proven. The defense could be better, but it’s not certain.

  24. hooahitsnotatomthing says: Jul 30, 2012 5:11 PM

It is going to be really hard to be better than last year. I think they are still class of the NFC North until they are dethroned.
The defense will be the key between a good and great season. Bringing in rookies to a sophisticated Dom Capers D and the departure of Collins will be significant changes that will take time to adjust to the new personnel. They will need to step up immediately with the first game being against the 49er because Rodgers may not have to possibility to carry them.
As a Bears fan, this is a super talented team. Unfortunetly for the Packers, the NFC North and the NFC in general is stacked with talent. It is going to be an amazing year of NFC North football.

  25. atthemurph says: Jul 30, 2012 5:11 PM

“the flaws that nevertheless allowed them to lose only one game during the season prevented them from winning the one game that meant more than any other.”

    WTF?

The Giants beat the Packers because they forced three Green Bay fumbles. 1 From John Kuhn who had never lost a fumble before NYG 3 pts. 1 by Rodgers who hadn’t lost a fumble all season on what was sure to be an easy TD pass. 1 from Ryan Grant who had not fumbled since week 5 which was returned inside the GB 5 yd line and followed by a NYG TD.

Say what you will about the GB defense but that loss was on GB’s offense. You cannot lose the turnover battle by a 4-1 margin and win many games. The NYGs D beat the GB offense (and there should have been one more GB fumble that was overturned.)

  26. roadbiscuit says: Jul 30, 2012 5:12 PM

The D is fully aware of what went wrong last year. Rodgers talking about it will not be an issue.

  27. fwippel says: Jul 30, 2012 5:19 PM

The Packers won’t be better in the regular season this year. They may have more success in the playoffs than they did last year, but 15-1 and 14-2 don’t happen every year, even for the best teams.

  28. shiftyshellshocked says: Jul 30, 2012 5:24 PM

Carl gerbschmidt sounds like one of those guys that wins at pulltabs and says it was skill. I don’t think the Packers will win the north this year. My opinion. Skol.

    asondej says: Jul 30, 2012 4:50 PM

    ———————————

Maybe he should, he can’t be any worse then the rest.

  30. skolvikings2011 says: Jul 30, 2012 5:35 PM

Aaron’s right. I’m betting 16-0 and a division-round thrashing by the Giants, Eagles or 49ers. That would be an improvement over last year.

  31. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Jul 30, 2012 5:36 PM

Like grandpa always said…”It’s all B.S. until kickoff.”

If I were Rodgers, I’d be focused on facing the best defense in the league opening day

  32. muskyhunter2542 says: Jul 30, 2012 5:51 PM

The Green Bay Packers will be just fine this year!!!

“Talk is cheap, play the game!” – Coach Tom Coughlin

  34. thankheavenfornumberseven says: Jul 30, 2012 5:58 PM

All they have to do is come within two touchdowns of a 9-7 team at home in the playoffs and they will have had a better season.

  35. thepvyharvin says: Jul 30, 2012 6:02 PM

They will be a very good 10-6

  36. tangysizzl says: Jul 30, 2012 6:11 PM

The Packers were fantastically awful on defense last year and still won 15 games. Even modest improvement from that side of the ball will do wonders for the team.

Nick Perry, Jerel Worthy, Mike Daniels and Dezman Moses will give the pass rush some serious juice just you wait and see. That was the only thing they were missing last year and come hell or high water that will not be the case this season.

  37. rikker12 says: Jul 30, 2012 6:16 PM

I like the way everyone is an expert on how the Packers are going to do. Rodgers is out there with these guys every day, and see’s these guys up front. I’ll take what Rodgers said over some of you, cool-aid drinking, wanna be football experts…

  38. pappavike says: Jul 30, 2012 7:52 PM

ya thats true! he is out there with his team mates But what else is he gonna say? Um I think will be a worse team this year! Come on who’s drinking the kool aid! They are the Nfc north champions of last year, But they earn it this year! they are not the only team that has improved

  39. tozzi7 says: Jul 30, 2012 8:11 PM

I am fine with Rodgers comments. I look at them as he is never comfortable with how things turn out. And with the way last season ended I don’t know any Packer fans who were happy with the result.
The defense knows they need to step it up so I don’t see Rodgers comments being a problem/rift. This team probably won’t go 15-1 but with an improved defense they should be able to make a deeper run into the playoffs.

    Packers 10-6

    Bears 10-6

    Vikings 2-14

  42. thetokyosandblaster says: Jul 30, 2012 9:55 PM

I love these delusional 9er fans.

The niners are half as good as the Packers.

    no more.

Regression year for San Fran, as a muddled backfield and a subpar QB can’t get it done.

And dunces, read what he said. He said they could lose more games and still be a better team.

Guessing half of you just read the title and thought you’d troll.

Packers > Every team in the NFC. The only real competition will come from the Ravens, Texans or Pats, whichever the AFC sacrifices to the slaughter in the Super Bowl.

  43. whowhatwherefootball says: Jul 30, 2012 9:55 PM

After barely making the playoffs and loosing to giants in a heart breaker they came back and won it all. After this season and that loss to the giants… Wouldn’t be surprised if every record in the book gets shattered.

  44. trapshoot says: Jul 30, 2012 10:28 PM

May not win 15 during regular season but will do better in post season.

  45. chi01town says: Jul 31, 2012 12:47 AM

Not happening packers fans an Rodgers is beliving the WRONG press. That team is WEAK. No running game to speak of an the worse defense in the NFL an they didnt do NOTHING to change the problems. Offensive Coordinator is gone an that will show up right away. An the offensive passing game has been EXPOSED by the Giants. If that aint enough the BEARS LOOK HUNGRY

  46. stellarperformance says: Jul 31, 2012 11:56 AM

Becoming “better” does not necessarily mean a better record. Think about this logically; What are the odds of bettering a regular season record of 15-1? Pretty slim…it’s not done very often. And what is the only direction the defense go? Only up.

Rodgers is describing an overall better team, one that hopefully won’t fade in the post-season, that’s all.

  47. chi01town says: Jul 31, 2012 7:47 PM

    @stellerperformance
Absolutely right.. The defense in Greenbay can only get better. I never thougt of it that way. They are already last. But they do need a running game
