Jets change practice schedule because of muscle pulls

Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis was able to return to the team portion of practice on Sunday, one day after he missed them because of tightness in his hamstring.

That positive result isn’t stopping the Jets from thinking about new ways to cut down on muscle pulls during training camp. Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley has missed time with a hamstring injury, wide receiver Chaz Schilens has had issues with his groin and wide receiver Santonio Holmes spent several minutes Monday getting stretched out by the team’s trainer.

All the injuries led Rex Ryan to call off a two-minute offense portion of practice Monday. He’s also going to start pushing the start of team practices back by 30 minutes and fill the extra time with stretching and extended warmups.

“We have had a lot of hamstrings, a lot of those type of deals,” Ryan said, via Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger. “If we can prevent them, our strength and conditioning (staff) and our trainers feel that would give us a better chance of being more successful with the hamstrings.”

It’s not the only change to practices at Jets camp. The team will be using buzzers designed to go off if quarterbacks hold onto the ball too long. As Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News points out, the Jets used these buzzers during the regular season after a disastrous offensive performance against the Ravens last year and the Packers are also using them during their practices this year.

Not everything’s changing, though. As of now, the team’s no shirts required policy remains in effect.
