Samuel is a good instinctive cover guy but he has issues the Falcons will soon find out about. Samuel free lances, doesn’t play within the scheme, and can’t tackle to save his life. Add to that he makes 10M a year and that translates to the Eagles getting a 7th round draft pick for him.

Perhaps the primary point of a corner is to defend the pass, but the point of playing defense is to, you know, defend. Sometimes, that means a cornerback has to tackle.

By your logic, D-lineman shouldn’t try to deflect balls at the line of scrimmage.

Asante may have made some big plays with INTs and pick-sixs, but he also got beat plenty on double moves. He takes a lot of risks out there. I’m not sure that he’s better than a vast majority of other corners.

All I care about is winning. And you can’t win if you don’t tackle (see 2011 Eagles Defense) . Hard hits really don’t have anything to do with it.

And why did you feel the need to use the word metric so many times? What, are you from London? Maybe you should stick to the other “football”.

Asante was & is a very dangerous Cornerback , but let’s be realistic here . Samuel only excells in one type of coverage (zone) and stays away from tackling like it was the plaque . I don’t believe that Reid thought #22′s game was in “steep decline” , I just think that Samuel fit the defense wanted to play . The Eagles wanted to play more man , they wanted to put Rodgers-Cromartie back on the outside , and they wanted to give extensions to they’re core group , and Asante’s $9M cap hit tied the Eagles down too much . I’ll miss the energy that he brought to training camp , but DRC is lighting Lehigh up right now . The Philadelphia Eagles fans would much rather Asomugha & DRC manning the outsides with a real slot like Boykin or Hanson playing inside . Enjoy Atlanta 22 , we’re good here !

We can expect to see a lot of screens, bubble screens, and pitches designed to run the ball right at Asante. He wants absolutely nothing to do with stopping the run.

I watched every Eagles game last year and Asante is not in steep decline whatsoever he was excellent last season.

However the Eagles want to play press coverage that’s what both Rodgers-Cromartie and Asomugha are best at Samuel is one of the least physical players in the NFL he excels in off coverage/zone.

The Eagles traded Asante so they could lock up Lesean Mccoy and implement a scheme on defense that will allow them to maximize the talent they have. Not sure why Andy said he’s in “steep decline” he just didn’t fit the scheme the Eagles will be running this season.

I still think Asante was the best corner on the Eagles. If it was a salary dump, then fine. But it’s ludicrous to suggest that he had lost his skills.

I’d just like to point out that Reid was never directly quoted as saying “steep decline”.
