Jammal Brown doesn’t need hip surgery

The Redskins appear to have dodged a bullet with right tackle Jammal Brown.

Brown was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list after the left hip injury that bothered him for most of last season flared up at the start of training camp. Brown tried a variety of different methods to rehab it over the offseason, including yoga, but it had to be troubling to the Redskins to see the problem recur so quickly.

The team is free to let out a little sigh of relief. An MRI of the hip revealed no structural damage, though and, according to Jason Reid of the Washington Post, that means Brown won’t require surgery to fix the problem. Brown will be treated for inflammation in the hip, which was operated on in 2009, and doctors will also take a look at his right hip.

Brown’s not totally out of the woods yet. The team has no timetable for his return, but obviously the hope is that Brown will be back before the end of camp and without further setbacks on the hip. In the meantime, Tyler Polumbus, Maurice Hurt and Willie Smith will fill in on the offensive line and make their cases for spots on the 53-man roster.
